I have relatives that live in South Florida and the spanish language is often used on my aunt's side of the family. Me being from Long Island, I don't often speak the lauguage.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can begin to learn the basics of this language?

I married into a spanish speaking family without knowing the first word. Now I can speak and understand it pretty well, but not perfect ;)

The best way I have learned is to listen to others speak it, and just knowing what they are talking about will help you learn to speak and understand.

Quick example is like you and a spanish speaking friend want to go somewhere, have your spanish speaking friend go ask/tell someone IN SPANISH whith you right there, and listen.

One easy one for ya though.

I learned this because of what it sounds like:

Casa means house, place you live, etc... I remember this one because it sounds like castle. And my home is my castle sooooooo... :)

EDIT: btw, I live in Southwest Florida and my in laws are from Pueto Rico and lived in NY before they moved down here.
