Being bilingual is a valuable asset in the job market, especially if you live in southern state. You'll definitely earn more than those who aren't bilingual (in the same workplace).

Exactly. Beyond that, calling Spanish "backwater" is just plain ignorant; on what facts are you basing this allegation that an entire language is inferior to English...or is it simply because you already know the latter, and are too lazy and unmotivated to learn the former? Oh wait, looks like I'm the one making assumptions now, silly me.

Beyond that, it's fairly tough to get along in American society without knowing any English at all. Sure, it happens, but that's because of assistance from close-knit communities just as much as it might be due to "loopholes in the system."

Edit: as for those mentioning the cultural aspects included in foreign language courses, in many instances the culture is as important--if not moreso--in communicating as the language itself. Beyond that, it provides a nice break from the rote memorization of conjugates and constant pronunciation rehearsal.

I've made those jokes that people coming to this country should learn to speak our language, but that's very ignorant. Learning Spanish will open up many opportunities, introduce you to more culture, and overall expand your horizon.

You want a business point of view on that? Look at the number of spanish speaking people coming to this country. There WILL be a demand for people that can speak english and spanish both. Since the demand will be there, you can become part of the supply. Not the best explanation, but if you run a business and only target english speakers, you're skipping out on the spanish speakers entirely.

Let's say you run a pizza business, but everyone there only speaks english. You see a local spanish community, and no one has targeted it. It's an untapped resource just WAITING for businesses to come into. You could start up a new portion of the business to cater to them. You'd have the entire market ordering from you.

Learning another language will also help you understand some things in grammar that otherwise might have been hard to understand, or just things you wouldn't have otherwise noticed. I wasn't very good at those exercises where you have to identify what certains parts of sentences were in middle school. I've been taking Spanish for a while and am now better at the more grammar related things. I probably worded this entire post poorly, but I hope my point is what you look for.

I knew not a lick of Japanese and did just fine.

You need to know your Shee-ite before you travel to a diff. country, no doubt there. As for learning the language? Think not/No need/Not necessary. If you don't know someone where you're visiting......... Hire a Translator.

Case in point, without high school Spanish I wouldn't have been able to help out in a car accident situation I witnessed 5 years ago. Woman ran through a stop sign and drilled the hell out of a Mexican guy in his car right in front of me. Wait, you needed to know Spanish to figure out that a guy who just got the "hell drilled out of him" needed you to call 911? You also needed all that high school Spanish to figure out that a person is speaking Spanish and would probably be better served if a Spanish speaking officer was on scene? You having known Spanish did nothing in this situation that any other competent English-speaking individual could not have done.
