Japanese is broken into 3 languages pretty much, Hiragana, Katkana, and Kanji. The first 2 being the Japaneses characters and kanji being the English type characters. I HIGHLY suggest you ignore kanji until you learn hiragan and katkana. Once you do this start to study how to put sentences together because the sentence structure is somewhat different then English is.

On Topic--I took Japanese for 2 years way abck in High School. All I remember how to say is , my name, that I speak Japanese very minimally, and to please treat me nicely. I speak it very politely, too...so that actually helps
Anyhoo, it was a pain in the ass to learn (perhaps b/c out teacher was insane), so my advice is to not even try...

why don't you just do Teach For America and teach english in japan for 1-2 years - pick up some japanese while you're at it~

Katakana first - Japanized foreign words, easiest to learn.

Hiragana second - every Japanese word can be written in Hiragana.

Kanji (along the way) - some are easy because they are like pictographs. Once you understand the association (what Americans would associate is not what Japanese associate).

Do NOT learn from a female. If you do, you will have to unlearn some phrases as you progress in knowledge.

Boku wa namakemono, dakara boku no Nihongo wa mama.

As to teaching English for a year or two, research the schools carefully. I have heard that some are not so good to work for.

Not Japanese, just live in Japan.
