I really want to learn Italian. I'm out of school and I work so I don't really have the option of taking a formal course. What is the most effective method of learning a language? Tapes/CDs? Video? Books? Any advice would be appreciated.

move to italy....preferably a rural area and submerge yourself in the culture and language. That is the most effective method.

You'll learn more this way in a few months then you will by studying the language for several years.

Or just rent the Godfather trilogy and then talk with an Italian accent. It's the next best thing, and it would be a lot cheaper.
 
Well moving to Italy isn't really an option at the moment. My first goal would be able to hold a conversation well enough to get around Italy without a problem.
