I've never heard "memento mori"; I wouldn't call it common. Where is it used?

"E pluribus unum" is easy. Out of many states, one great country is formed.

"e pluribus, unum" = "of many, one" = talking the 13 colonies making up one nation. each colony represents a letter in the motto.
