LEARN ENGLISH!

I work at a University which does a lot of research. I am responsible for (the summer only) testing 1600 fume hoods to ensure proper operation. Now, this means that I enter damn near 1600 labs. Upon entering a lab, I explain what I am doing, how long it will take, and what the results are. This is usually pretty easy, unless the person doesn't speak english.

Now, I may be in the wrong, but if you are working in the midwest doing research in a laboratory which houses many, MANY volitile chemicals and hidden hazards that you could at least understand English? In the event of an emergency, there is no time to try to explain things, you tell them once and go.

Weak rant, I know, but it is my last week in this job and it just took me 10 minutes to explain what I am doing to one of the lab monkies who brought me to their superior who brought me ot the reasearch safety officer (the only one to speak english out of the three). The test takes 2 minutes. Ugh..grumble.

Your western mindset that requires other people to embrace the American form of language creates a precedence for racism and discrimination

Only one solution. Label everything in every single language that exists.

😛

Could you imagine reading a material safety data sheet, or how thick they would be?!

EDIT: Not to mention the required standard operating procedures they have to document, to just list the first of many required documents.

You think you have it bad, how do you think their students feel trying to learn from someone they can't understand?

Your title should be Learn to speak English!

I think he was just kidding. 😉

I fully support making English the official national language - now, before we end up having to have 2 national languages.

However, until that happens, I'm not going to bitch and moan because somebody speaks a different language than me.

it baffles me why people move to the US and dont bother to learn the language

Generally it's because their country blows chunks. They want the money and opportunities America offers but they don't want to bother integrating at all. To be fair, it's not like we do much to force them, if Mexico was way better then here and they made no effort to force me to speak Spanish, I wouldn't bother learning either.

I'm pretty progressive about just about everything, but seriously, learn the goddamn language. If speaking Spanish or Hindu or whatever is that important, either learn both languages or stay at home where everyone speaks your language. Expecting Americans to somehow learn every language an immigrant could conceivably speak is preposterous.

so if we were in mexico and his mexican counterpart told you in espanol that he was doing a test, he wouldnt be as justified to state that in that situation it would be better if you at least understood that countries language? c'mon now, have some sense. this is america, we speak english. sometimes poorly, but if i say "hey this thing is gonna blow up" you should at least know that its going to blow up without me figuring out how to translate to whatever language you choose to speak instead of the "native" tongue. if you go to france, will you know when someone tells you to "stick em up"? will you think they are telling you to go 5 paces to the left or will you say "sorry, i dont speak french" and rely on him to translate?

im half mexican, a lot of my family speaks spanish. the ones that live here all speak either english or both spanish and english, they think its ridiculous that any other countries people would come here and not learn the language.

The way I see it, being in America and not being able to communicate in English (I'm not asking for fluent even, just simply bale to convey the intended message to another person and able to receive one back) has to be AWFUL. For example, in my Spanish course (3rd semester) there is an emphasis on conversations in the language and anything said during class is requested to be in Spanish. Personally I feel like an ass when my limited knowledge of said language breaks down the flow to simply saying "Como se dice "blank" en espanol", which translated to," how do you say "blank" in spanish". Why anyone without a proper knowledge of English would take a position that requires it to a high level is beyond me.

The United States has no official language. Also, the Spanish speaking population is growing by leaps and bounds. The #1 radio station in New York City is in Spanish. Embrace multi-culture-ism, because there is nothing you can do to stop it.

We could nuke them from orbit.

Maybe you should learn English first.

"Volatile"

We're talking about basic comprehension skills here, not passing a nitpicky high school level grammar course, which, by the way, would be useless anyway. I'm in college and I still don't know what a preposition is, yet somehow I rarely make spelling mistakes, don't have a problem speaking with good grammar, and have probably used a preposition correctly in this post.

Or start coating Walmart's selection of car accessories in lead paint.

They can keep their culture, that's fine, we just want them to embrace our language. It is a two-way street, you know.

We should invade them and force our culture and language on them....but nobody would want to live there.

They do it because they know they can get away with it.
