learn a foreign language software recommendations

Has anybody used any of those software packages that help you learn a foreign language? Are any of them worth it? If you have any experience with any of them and can recommend one or warn me away from others, let me know. I'm not even sure what's available out there so any help would be appreciated.
 
I would like to learn some basic French. I'm sure there are plenty of options out there but I'm equally sure that most of them suck. So, I am looking for some experiences from anybody that has tried any of them (for any language).
