Ya, they're the richest company in the history of the world. What's stopping them from "accidentally leaking" 10 different prototypes all over the world to throw people off? They could have a manufacturing plant for each fake phone even!

I think this is Apple's first big screwup (they've had a bunch of mini-screwups, especially with their OS). Sure, it'll sell, but i think the criticism of the terrible design might really resonate with the public and it's the first big mistep into turning Apple into the 90's version of the company where they'll have like 5% marketshare. Not overnight of course, but i can see it maybe 5 - 7 years down the line.

What makes you think this is the real iPhone 5?

There have been multiple sources throughout the past few months, even the internals of the iphone 5 have shown this aspect ratio. It's hideous, deal with it.

I don't have a problem with the size/shape of that really. The back actually looks quite nice, though the front does seem kind of off to me.

Not a chance in Hades.

The much bigger potential issues IMO are with the direction of iOS 6 and the app ecosystem. The hardware aspect ratio is fine for the iPhone 5. Also, while I do agree it would have been OK to see it increase by a few mm, I think a few mm is all that would be OK. Anything wider than the iPhone 3G is too wide IMO.

The aspect ratio looks oddball. Apple has been so consistent on resolution and aspect ratio up to this point.

It does look strange, assuming that pic is legit (and I will assume it is).

Well, yeah, but i do think that this combined (i mean, come on, it IS ugly) plus the shitty OS that's lightyears BEHIND android is really going to hurt the company in the long term.

It looks like the bezel size on the sides may be the same as my iPhone 4.

I have a Nexus 7, an iPad 2, and an iPhone 4. I think iOS still has the advantage, but Jelly Bean (or maybe Ice Cream Sandwich) is the first Android OS that even competes in the same league as iOS. All versions before 4.0 weren't real contenders.

However, that's just the OS. iTunes is still in a completely different class from Google Play. Google Play seems very limited in comparison.

What are you talking about. iOS gets features that android has had for a while much much later. Remember when Apple fans were so giddy about FINALLY getting notifications? Yeah, we were laughing at you guys. It's going to be funny seeing your reactions when you FINALLY get widgets.

And itunes is crap. Now, the only thing that i WILL praise itunes for is having podcasts, but that's about it.

Yeah, it was stupid that Apple was late to the party with stuff like copy/paste and notifications. However, even then I found using older versions of Android just irritating. The OS felt like a jumpy hackjob overall before Android 4, and of course, the app support was poor. It's better now, but it's still not in the same league as iOS.

I know you don't like iProducts, but quite frankly I'm glad Google isn't resting on its laurels with attitudes like yours. They realize the severe deficiencies that exist in Android, and are working hard to address them. The biggest example is Project Butter, and the result of this is reviewers are actually saying that Android is finally as smooth as iOS after this many years.

So, as I said as someone who owns both Android and iOS products, I still think iOS is ahead of Android, but 4.1 has narrowed the lead significantly.

Hey now, I've had widgets on my iPhone for quite some time now. True, Apple didn't give them to me but that's besides the point. :)

I have to admit the new shape looks weird to me. Then again, I must be one of the few people that doesn't think the size of the iPhone screen right now is bad. I like having a bit smaller of a phone.

You have it the other way around. Apple needs to catchup to ICS/JB. They are way behind.

Obvious fan boy is obvious.

How is itunes crap, explain yourself. Perhaps you like getting all your stuff free, but if you are a paying customer like everyone should be, itunes is the best media portal currently available.

Explain to me why anybody would want a wider phone. What are the advantages to having a wider phone, when almost everything application is used top to bottom (emails, messaging, reading websites), when the only thing that requires wideness is viewing video, for which you flip the phone anyways. Clearly, you know nothing about ergonomics. The only thing a wider phone would bring is a more awkward grip, additional weight, and more bulk in your pocket.

Also by the looks of it, it's incredibly thin, even more than the thinnest android device available. You can rest assured will be one of the top marketing points from Apple. That's ergonomics, not a wide fat ass phone.

Checkmarks on a spec sheet do not make a superior EXPERIENCE.

Mango is behind iOS and Android in terms of spec lists, but I still enjoy using it more than either of them. Just because Android supports facial recognition and NFC (to name 2 of many features that Android has that iOS lacks) does not make it an inherently better OS to use. As Eug pointed out Google is finally addressing major deficiencies with 4.0+. Drawing things in and unifying their UI under Holo, with new typography was the first step. Project Butter, so that you can finally have a smooth UI experience. They had Matias Duarte up on stage to talk about all the design work that they had done with ICS. These are all indications of areas that Android lags behind iOS.

If you are unwilling to admit areas that your preferred OS is deficient, then perhaps you are the one that doesn't know what they are talking about.

As for the appearance of the alleged new iPhone... I like it, though will want to see it in person. I think that Apple nailed the design of the 4, it is a classic, iconic look that is very simple, straightforward and beautiful. Maintaining that aesthetic strikes me as the right move. Just because other manufacturers pop out differentiated plastic devices every 6 months in the hopes of finding a hit, doesn't mean that is the right way to do things.

Knowing Apple's typical security and practices on leaks and prototypes, I'm going to go with fake. Possibly a seeded fake to see where the leak came from.

I don't see an issue with this form factor at all. I really don't want a bigger phone...just thinner and more rugged. The less I can tell I have a phone in my pocket, the better.

Heh. It's funny to me how whatever people even believe Apple is about to do, they'll argue til they're blue in the face that its now superior to everything else. "How could anyone possibly want a wider phone!!?? Apple's way is always best! even when its just a rumor!"

Maybe just calm down until anyone actually has one in their hands before all the predictable pronouncements about the best way of doing things? Just a suggestion.

Personally, if that is really an iPhone ... It'd be an improvement over the 4 for certain.

As long as it's not absolutely hideous I don't really care about the look of the device. I care more about the hardware beneath the cover and the OS. 99% cover the phone with some kind of case/cover so all you see is the screen anyway. I like the design of iPhone 4 and think it's nice looking phone. Bigger/longer phone is fine. I'm more interested in things like screen resolution. You know the stuff that actually matter.

I want to see some improvements in iOS. I feel like Android past iOS as the superior OS with ICS and Jelly Bean just furthered the lead. Apple needs to step it up a notch with their development.

I'm going with real. I've given up on my arguments of a scaled up 960x640 4" screen with thinner size bezels, for a slightly taller and slightly wider phone. There is just too much "evidence" that Gruber is right.

1136x640 it is. :p

P.S. That makes the phone 640p as opposed to the equivalent of 540p.

I don't think it's gonna be fake, there have been too many leaks showing the same design. I don't like the way they made the screen larger either, I'd like to know how they plan to handle the different aspect ratios for current apps, is there gonna be some crap like black bars on the sides in games? If that's the case I'd steer clear of it personally.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if it's only going up to 4", but now widescreen, isn't it, for the most part, the same amount of surface area as the 3.5" on the current iphones?

Don't get me wrong, widescreen is the way to go. It lets you increase the size of the screen, while still keeping it manageable.

My gs3 and nexus fit fine in my pocket and I think the 70% world market share agrees that people like wider phones.

Apple fans will line up and buy what ever they put out anyways and if Google charged for its os it would out profit apple in less than a year.

Goggle doesn't make a penny for its os
