it cant be 336sp because Nvidia uses 32sp clusters on the 400 series.

That photo of the die shots is just the GTX480 core squished down. Nothing more. Done in photoshop or even simply MS Paint. I'd have to call this a big 'ol fake. And if it was 192 bit, there would only be six GDDR chips, not 8. Unless that schematic just shows the circuitry of the PCB. Six 32-bit chips = 192 bit. 8 chips would equal 256-bit.

People actually have this much time on their hands? Nah. Just looking for web site traffic I would imagine. Now every Tom, Dick and Harry web site is going to link to this in the hopes of traffic to their own sites.

240 stream processors would be in line with a 192 bit memory bus...but as you pointed out that would require the use of half of a SM cluster...it could round up 256 stream processors (or down to 224), which sounds like a reasonable number to me. I still don't know about this whole "overclocking to 480 performance" thing, not unless you can unlock the card. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what shakes out.

maybe I am misunderstanding you but 240sp would have nothing to do with the 192bit bus. anyway 256sp(8 32sp clusters) is certainly the likely number since its based on half the gf100 which has a maximum of 512sp(16 32sp clusters). yeas the 480 only has 480sp but there would be no reason for the gf100 to have 1 of its clusters disabled.

I figured that since the bus bandwidth is half of the 480, the sp count could be half as well...but 256 just makes way more sense for many reasons..

When will nvidia launch a DX11 chip to compte with the 57xx cards?

(not handicapped GT100 chips or renamed g92s :p)

I believe that is what the gtx460 and/or variants of the gf104 are going to do. the gf104 is a different chip and July timeframe according to most rumors is when we should see it.

2 billion transistors seems rather high for something which is around half a Fermi (or less - 1/3rd of the L2 cache).
If it is 2b that makes it as many transistors as the HD58xx series.

2B with more power draw and none of the performance of a 5800 series. Not to mention these will be hitting close to the time the 6000 series will be coming out which are probably going to tap dance on Nvidia's pointy little head.

OEM-only according to FUD makes sense. A product that's a hair faster than the 5770 but much more power hungry, noisy and expensive might sit on shelves well into refreshes from both companies. In other words, anyone demanding 4870 level performance for ~$200 already has it and isn't going to run to the store at release.
