BREAKING NEWS:

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenceman Phil Housley from Chicago for future considerations.

TSN has confirmed Doug Gilmor has been traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs by the Montreal Canadiens.

EAST SIDE YO! 😀 I love our new majority owners...we'll be making serious pay-out-the-$$$ runs at it for the next few years before a salary cap gets implemented. Might as well take advantage our the huge warchest we've got while we can!

The Wings got Schnieder, which I am very excited about. I wasn't excited about seeing Avery being part of the deal, though.

Unfortunately for the Leafs and the East, the West will destroy whoever comes out of the East. 😀

Canucks did not do anything I think......... hopefully they will have some depth for the playoffs but with every other team stocking up it does not look good.

Cheers,
Aquaman

That is probably true.

However on a positive note, the West will beat the crap out of each other in the quarters and the semis. So much so that when Ottawa or Toronto meat the Stars in the cup finals, the Stars will be more battered and bruised and will not be able win the series. 🙂

Canucks will be out first round. They don't have the defense and the goalie to make a successful playoff run.

It will be very interesting to see. I think if they get by the first round, they will have a hugely tough time getting by any of Detroit, Colorado, Dallas and maybe St. Louis (if Pronger comes back).

I liken Vancouver to Ottawa a few years ago. They are brilliant offensively, but very weak defensively. Their defensive weakness will become very apparent in the playoffs. If not, then they will be facing even weaker teams or a few of their no-name defense men step up and play real hockey. 🙂

Of course, these are just my opinions...

Gilmour and Housley... is it 1992 already? Those guys are like 50! 😛

Both of them are declining in skills but still offer solid leadership...

It will be very interesting to see how they do in Toronto. Playoff hockey has always shown me that grit, heart and experience (and an amazing goalie 😀) are the most important ingredients for a successful playoff run. The most recent examples of this are Gary Robert's and Steve Yzerman's playoff games last year.

With that in mind, I think these are great pickups. However, Toronto's playoff run will center around Belfour's performances. If he can play consistently well game in and game out, then Toronto has a great chance to make the cup finals. However, Ottawa is the team to beat in the east. Their defense have finally started to come around. Lalime is playing amazing hockey right now.

I think Dallas (if they can get Guerin and Turco) back will be very tough to beat. I don't think Cujo is good enough to win a cup.

Well we made a trade. We got Brad May from the Coyotes for 3rd rounder. I guess he gives use some playoff experience some grit & some more depth at the forward postion.

As for the Goaltending for Vancouver, I think Cloutier has gotten over the nik lidstrom 50 footer (which no one will ever let him forget) but the thing is will he be able to recover from the knee injury he has right now. The last injury took him about 12 games to get back into the swing of things.

As for the defense........ they are not that bad (although they are missing Mattias Ohlund). The only guy I don't really like is Sopel...... he seems to blow a tire at least once a game. The PK is tied for 6th with Detroit, 10th in GA.

If we can hold onto the Division title then we will get past the first round and if we get into the second round those teams you mentioned will be pretty tired with thier first round series. UNfortunately it seems like the Avs will catch us and probably will take the lead. Which means we will probably play St Louis. Who now have Chris Osgood.

So we shall see.

Ottawa trading for Rob Ray is a clear sign that thier management understands what Leaf fans have known for several seasons.... Ottawa lacks grit.

They've been the team to beat in the Eastern regular season for quite some time now. In the playoffs..... well they've just been the team that gets beat.

Who knows though? Maybe this year things will be different.

Or maybe the Leaf's will just spank them again.

Right now, the only goalies that are good enough to win the cup are Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, maybe Marty Turco, maybe Patrick Lalime and maybe Eddie Belfour. Turco and Lalime are still playoff unproven and Belfour maybe a little passed his prime.

I think all other goalies will need a lot of help from their defense. Having said that, Detroit's acquisition of Scheider makes Cujo with Detroit's D look really good.

I couldn't be more happy with the trades.

We really needed 2 defencemen cause Berg Belack and Lumme are NOT the defence you want to depent on in the Playoffs.

I thought Kovy and Nolan would be the big trades. Holy Shis was I wrong. Too many trades to even keep track of.

I think Nolan was the biggest trade. The others were smaller and all the hype about Palfy, Miller etc didnt turn in to anything.

Yay. My Capitals picked up Sergei Berezin... another scoring winger when their problem is defensive depth. :|

Umm... hello? Olie Kolzig is virtually the sole reason the Caps have the record they have. He's stood on his head for the team (again) and he even says its his most consistent year. He can win the cup if the rest of the team can avoid letting up 30+ SOG every night on him.

I feel sorry for Carolina.... Berezin sucks.

<--- Hates Barezin with a passion.

hahahaha! Honestly, Berezin would be good anywhere but in the NHL. That solo crap don't work here, comrade. 😀
