For Radar Detectors cheap is definatelly NOt good.

Exactly, and that is why this one doesn't even come close to the Valentine which completely dominates all unbiased testing by far.

The escort pretty much rivals V1 from all the tests that have been done. However, V1 still comes out on top.

Car-n-Driver Feb.2002 - Great Detector Test
6 detectors, the Uniden LRD987 took last.

1 Valentine One - $400 though
2 Escort Passport - $200ish
3 Bel 980 - $200ish
4 Cobra XR-1050
5 Whistler 1780
6 Uniden LRD 987

The Bel has the best warning distance/least falses for the money. I use a Whistler 1490 from way back. Shows radar type and strength (1-9); I find this indispensible.

edit: 2 types of driving: areas that you know and areas that you don't. Learning your area and understanding the detector's warnings will allow you to use the Uniden safely, though the extra time is extremely helpful. I wouldn't risk it... In areas you don't know, the extra time is the difference between a $200 ticket or no ticket at all. I am in no way endorsing breaking the law. Also, front/rear laser spread is over-rated. Five-O likes to zap from the front, near the road. If they're 100ft off the road, they have a much greater angle to shoot at the target accurately. It's like trying to snipe a scout running across the screen, only the Police don't have Aim-bot.

I spent $90 at Best Buy on my Cobra, and it works great. And for being ranked the 4th best, its a good cost/performance ratio. Though if ya got $400, I do hear Valentine is best.

Sadly, none of them can give you any warning for laser detectors... except when you've actually been hit :( Damn laser and its non-spreading radiation

I have a Valentine 1, and let me tell you, it is worth it...Quite possibly one of the very few things I buy that I actually see value in.

Possibly saved me from 5-6 speeding tickets (not that I excessively speed) in small Texas towns that are notorious for giving out speeding tickets for going like 7 over...

Sucks going through those small towns when you are traveling in between big cities...

Valentine 1 is definetly the best, cheap radar detectors have false alarms all the time, and do not allow the added security of long range detection.I have had many radar detectors, and when you consider the costs of tickets and increased Insurance rates theses days,if you like to drive fast- why gamble with half ass? Valentine 1 offers the best protection you can get, identify's by band, x, k,ka, and lazer, and well as also different tones for different radar bands.Additionaly, it tells you if coming from in front, the sides, or behind.I have been hit by instant on so many times that this is the only radar sensitive enough to give me advance warning to stand on the brakes before they could get an accurate speed on me, no tickets.
Yes it is expensive, but there is a reason for that, simply it out performs all others.
Cheap detector =poor protection
Valentine 1= best you can get, and belive me when I tell you, after you try valentine you will never be satisfied with another brand, unless of course you are a "binky head"- then nothing matters.

Here is the link to the Car and Driver radar test....by and far the best/most impartial test out there. Look at the range graphs.....time really is money.

after my sixth ticket I decided it would be wise to invest in a good detector and picked a V! up on eBay for 390 with the concealed display. And never regretted it. you just gotta know how to drive with a detector, you can't go barreling down a road alone at night and hope it saves ya, but if there are other cars and you know how radar works you can easily, and fairly safely drive ove the limit, within moderation. I'd check out Valentines site, there is alot of info on it and detectors in general there

I have wanted a V1 for years. I keep hoping they will have some kind of promotional, such as free shipping.

I keep seeing their full page (back cover) ad in the Porsche Panorama magazine every month without fail.

Has anyone EVER seen a promotional of any kind on V1?

Nope..........when you're the best, there's no reason to go for promotional gimmicks to sell yourself. Your reputation speaks and sells itself for you.

Yeah thats what I thought.

I just HATE the idea of paying full price though. IT goes against my hot deals nature.

What do you guys think about JAMMERS?
Are they for real? I have read about some active and passive jammers that scramble the radar signal.

None of those were mentioned here. I still cannot imagine how you can defeat 'instant on' with the above detectors if its not a busy highway and fortunate enough to receive the reads that were activated because of other cars before you.

The only jammer I am aware of is by Rocky Mountain. A google search pulled up a couple mfr's.

I still got fvcked with a V1... not even going that fast by LIDAR. ARGHHHH... radar detectors = false sense of security... less aware while driving, didn't look for cops bam... 4 quick LIDAR warnings on my V1, too late.

From what I've heard, the jammers pretty much dont work. You can go here to check it out. There's a lot of information about radar detectors, and a big article about radar jammers, and particularly that Rocky Mountain jammer you speak of.

Couple of points on this discussion:

1. Jammers do not work effectively in today's world. Some of the ones marketed don't do anything, they are just boxes with wires on them per auto magazine testing. One or two used to sort of work on K band or X band, but are obsolete because of the wide band Ka gun models out there.

2. The Valentine 1 is a great detector. However, using Car and Driver as an 'unbiased' or 'best' source to make your choice is questionable. Patrick Bedard, Senior Editor of C&D, is on the payroll of Valentine as a 'consultant' plus Valentine is one of C&D's biggest advertisers. Other testers have their own biases as well (and they recommend the Escort 8500 over the V1).

My advise is to look at all of the reviews out there and try the detectors out yourself. I have an Escort 8500 and it is the best detector I have had, and I've owned 3 others over the years.

My testing resulted in about a tie with the two detectors, the V1 has the cool direction arrows while the 8500 has fewer falses, cooler display options, lower price (about $250) and perhaps slightly better Ka detection.

i think having an eye on all mirrors works best when speeding, unless of course you're driving stupid fast. usually when i'm speeding, i always check my mirrors and the freeway entrances.

Illegal here in Va... but I used to have one when I lived in Pa. I lost it in the move. I do go to pay a few times a year, but not enough to make buying another worth it.

Someone needs to make a rear view mirror with hidden radar functionality.. haha

Yikes pal, backup claims like that if you are going to make them.

Anyone look at radartest.com? Its funny, their review TRASHES the V1, saying such things as it had the quietest audible warning....while the C&D test says it the loudest. Someone isn't telling the truth, either a website (they never lie) or an automotive enthusiast magazine in print since the 50's.

I recall seeing something on "jammers" a few years back....they were interviewing a fellow from the FCC, and his take was the only reason jammers are legal is that they don't work. Part 15 FCC rules....the device may not cause harmful interference...that whole thing.
