Le Sigh. Come list your expensive maintenance.

After 15 years the old chariot needs a clutch change. The clutch isn't truly slipping yet but in 1st gear you can almost feel a little chatter as it quasi slips.

Dealer quotes $5780. I'm guessing it's because it's considered a "sports" car by some and it's AWD. Guess I can't complain. At least I got a $50 off coupon and a free pickup and drop off coupon. WOO!

So list your most expensive amount you paid for maintenance on a car and what you got for it.

Dude, you gotta break that down into parts/labor and list the year, make, and model of vehicle... D:

I paid $35 for an oil change once. Oh, and I bought a buddy a bottle of Crown Royal for helping me change out spark plugs.

Slipping clutch appears in the high gears. When you floor it in the 1:1 (4th on some cars / 5th on others) do you see the RPMs jump up faster than you are accelerating? You should have a ton of time to find a good deal since a slipping clutch rarely happens in a couple of miles.

I could always post the breakdown after it is done. It is an "engine out" job though so the labor is going to be killer. It's a old squashed VW beetle...also know as a 993 TT.

LOL! Can't cry about a repair costs when you're driving that around!

Funny how I've heard from many mechanics that owners of German cars complain the most about the cost of repairs/maintenance.

Oh, and I suppose to answer the thread topic. I've never paid labor for any maintenance/repair on my cars, just parts. So, that puts my most expensive "job" as a clutch replacement on my old Honda. I think the OEM parts cost about $300.

Your right, I shouldn’t complain, I just get a little to used to maintaining my trusty Honda.

Ah 993 TT!!!

Great car!

A 500 horsepower clutch for a 993 should run about 2k. I would shop around and see if someone would do the clutch and rear main seal at the same time and ask them to whole thing for 1k labor. 993TT clutch is about 14 hrs 2wd 16 hrs 4wd book but can be done in half the time.

You should be able to get it done for around 4500 if there arent any surprises and that includes a 800 dollar flywheel.

Shop around.

My labor costs for pulling the transmission, intake, and timing chain covers and replacing the chains was zero. Course, it took me a few days to get it all done, but still. Its not so bad, and I hope to sell the car by the time I hit another hundred thousand miles.

A few years ago I could have purchased a low mileage BMW 740i from my Mother-In-Law but after talking to our mechanic (we owned a 3 series at the time) he talked us out of it. Apparently, there were some issues with those engines and they were very costly to keep running once the miles rack up. As it was my MIL spent $3k replacing the power steering pump along with a few other expensive out of warranty repairs. She bought it used with less than 20k miles on it and sold it a year later.

I drove it a few times and really liked it but just too expensive to maintain.

Agree completely Jules. And if I recall correctly, the issue with the 4.0V8 in some years was something to do with the cylinder liners and the bores getting worn into an oval over time. Definitely not a cheap fix.

Auch, not exactly an economy car.

My worst bill was around 400$, it was a 15,000 kilometre maintenance visit.

BTW, on my first car right now 🙂

Mine is probably aftermarket clutch/flywheel/master and slave cyl replacements and transmission rebuild upgraded to stage 2.

About $1,700 in parts and $600 labor. Shifts beautifully.

Can't imagine the cost of that on the 993.

1K for a timing belt and tune up on a Mazda Millenia.

I don't buy vehicles with timing belts anymore.

2001 1.8t jetta - $380 for a new clutch and the $4xx labor
timing belt was about $280 in parts, another $5xx in labor
oil pump + labor was about $8xx they had to retime the cam as well

so glad I got rid of it! I then found rust, and felt even better about dumping it on someone else

the aftermarket warranty for my new bmw cost $2800, that was expensive, haha....I HEARD replacing turbos on the 135i is about 7k, so IF needed, it will pay for itself, then some.

.

when they charge 5200 bones to replace a clutch i can see why! 😵

the most ive paid for any maintenance was $1150 for my clutch in my dodge ram 1500. i really fubared it, and there was much collateral damage to replace/ fix. that was the only clutch i ever had replaced for me, ive always done it myself. time was not on my side for that one tho.

Year before last I put 40+ lbs boost to my Duramax and ended up with blown head gaskets... Dealer qouted me at $6400 and a private shop said $5300 and neither of these included head studs... So for about $800 in total parts and 30 hours of labor later I think it was the best route...

I did offer myself a warranty but said nay no thanks I do good work...😀 That was 23K miles ago and on a recent trip to tier 4 engine school the truck got 20.2 MPG so must have done something right...

Its all relative:

$100k car, $5k clutch

$20k car, $1k clutch

You get the idea. Besides, replacing the clutch in your truck doesn't require removing the engine/trans.

hehe ya, i already knew and agree with that. but if i were to own a 100k car, id probably not care that the clutch costs 5200 to replace.

and yeah, they had to disconnect the transmission in my truck to replace all the parts i twisted up.not sure if they dropped it or just yanked it back a bit tho.
