Okay call me dumb, but I don't see the advantage of LCD's compared to CRT's. I mean yea, they take a smaller footprint, but who has a desk thats only 2 inches deep? I went into BB today to take a look at some LCD's and the display is HORRIBLE compared to the nice Sony's (G520) yet cost twice the price. The display on my G400 makes them look like doggy poo. Am I missing something here or are LCD's just that bad and cost alot because of the new technology alone. I'm sure this has been debated alot but what am I missing here? There has to be some catch...

alot of times display units in stores appear dim due to the flourescent lighting(i think)

i am very content with the image quality of my mag lcd, add that to the fact that it is wall mountable and generally more attractive than a bulky crt...the trade offs IMO are worth it.

advantages of LCD:
1. much higher brightness, you'll feel comfortable looking at LCD in midnight without turning on the room light, you can still see the screen when there is strong sun light behind you.
2. much smaller footprint it's newer thin bezel and thin panel
3. much lower wattage usage = save your electricity bill
4. much lower radiation

disadvantages of LCD:
1. red color is not red, even worse than CRT
2. price
3. fixed at 1 resolution

Those LCD you find horrible at BB are low-end models, low-end model CRT also looks horrible when compared to a mid to high-end model CRT.

Don'y forget about screen size too. I replaced my old Princton 17in CRT with a Viewsonic VA720 LCD 17in and my Viewsonic has more screen size and a resolution of 1280 x 1040. Instead of maximizing all the programs I run in smaller windows because of all the extra screen realstate.

But my general concern is LCD's just don't look 'as good' as a good CRT. Is this the general concensus? I was looking at a high end $2000 24" widescreen sony LCD, so I don't think it was a horrible low end. It was sitting right next to the Sony E540 or something playing the same thing and didn't look as good. I was considering getting an LCD but not after that. I have plenty of desk space so space is not an issue. I just want pure image quality and it looks like CRT's are still the clear winner. So I got myself a G500 ;)

One thing you might consider about the image your seeing on the LCD's you describe, is they may not be setup properly.... If the display is not set to its native resoloution, being run off of a poor graphics card or something else, you may not be seeing what the LCD is capable of... After looking at a Samsung 191T, I got a major wood for one (or for the rebadged version sold by Dell), even though I am running a pretty nice Monitor (Mitsubishi DP 920 19"). The only thing keeping me from buying one is I am just waiting for them to improve the pixel response time, or whatever they need to do to improve on the ghosting evident in some games....

So do LCD's have better image quality than CRT's? I didn't think this was the case but I could be wrong...

A good quality LCD running off of a good graphics card with DVI is a sight to behold.... And much easier and on the eyes than a CRT is....

My main interest in LCDs is the fact that there is no full screen refresh. When reading text the image is perfectly flat without flicker...like reading a book. Even at high refresh rates a good CRT will have some flicker/jitter which makes reading for long periods uncomfortable.

On my trinitron, I can look closely and see pixels. On my Inspiron 8200 Super XGA monitor on my laptop, I strain too find a pixel anywhere on the screen. The definition, and crispness is insanely higher on my LCD than my CRT. For now, I will keep my Trinitron for gaming, but for Internet, Email, Office apps, chatting on AIM, I will never go back to a CRT.

I have the Dell 1900FP (rebaged Samsung 191t) and i love it. Since i'm in college... and dont really have that much time to play games, this monitor is a perfect match for me. Viewing webpages and word documents in much better on an LCD. I've watched movies and played Americas Army on it without any problems whatsoever. I will admit that i am not a hard core gamer and would probably not notice any ghosting if there was any. I transitioned from a 17" Sony Triniton and I have to say that i can tell no difference in gaming quality... this 19" is also huge! My roommate has a Samsung 955DF 19" monitor and my monitor is noticably larger.

Somewhere I heard there is a new generation of LCD's that are supposed to be alot better. What is it called again? How much will they cost and what issues do they fix??
