LCD's

How are LCD's on the eyes compared to a trinitron crt? Im at the computer for like 12 hours a day and my eyes start to hurt after a while...and am considering upgrading to a LCD if they are better on the eyes...any info appreciated, thanks.

I have a KDS Rad 5 at home and have to use a 17" CRT at work. I can't stand to look at the damn CRT for more than 5 minutes because it really hurts my eyes. I can sit and stare at the LCD for hours and hours and my eyes never begin to hurt. Purchasing an LCD is probably the best and most practical purchase I have made in a long time.

From the standpoint of eyestrain, LCDs are far better than CRTs. Even CRTs with the best anti-reflective coatings don't match an LCD, which don't reflect light at all. Also, LCDs don't flicker, so a 60Hz refresh rate will not drive you batty. Even a CRT at 85Hz is less pleasant on the eyes than an LCD at 60Hz.

There are of course a number of downsides to LCDs. First is the pixel refresh rate, which will cause some blurring with fast-moving objects, even with LCDs rated at 25ms (currently the lowest available in affordable consumer level LCDs). Viewing angle is also an issue to varying degrees...CRTs don't suffer this problem at all. And finally, LCDs should be run in its optimum resolution or text will become a bit blurry due to the LCD circuitry having to resize an image to fit the fixed number of pixels. CRTs don't have pixels that are fixed...any resolution will look just as good, at least for text.
