Anyone have any recommendations??? I want to keep it >$1000

Currently I'm looking at a Samsung LN40A550/LN40A650 (although that one's out of price range, but if it comes down to about $1000 I could squeeze it in)

Sony KDL40S4100 (which is about to drop to $998)

What I want:

40-42" (46" if the price is around the same)
1080p (has to be)
I'll be playing 360/PS3 and have a small PC running through it
Primary usage will be for movies/tv though...

I looked at the LN40A550 in BB the other night and it looked horrible playing a DVD...but I hear this is a really nice model, is it just going to look like crap w/ Std broadcasts and DVD's that aren't being upscaled??

I'll be buying a small home theatre in a box as well, I want it to match the brand of tv that I get though.

I'll also be sitting about 6ft away from the unit and it'll be sitting on a stand in a somewhat small living room

Thanks in advance for helping me choose a tv!

Why do you want to match the brand of your HTIB? Onkyo makes some of the best HTIB's and doesn't make TV's. Sony makes good TVs (overpriced) but their HTIB's are crap IMO. I would recommend getting two separate brands in this area for sure, because outside of Pioneer I can't think of a brand I trust with Audio and Video.

The Samsung 550 wins hands down over the Sony S series, its competitor is the V series which I still think it wins, just slimly. The 650 is definitely the better screen and it beats the Sony W series IMO, but slimly again (Sony is 8 bit panel, Samsung is 10 in both cases).

If you want 120Hz for under 1000 from a good brand, look at the Toshiba 40XF550 from Costco. Comes with the Costo warranty/return policy and its one of my favorite panels this year, especially since the slim bezel makes it take up so little space on a cabinet.

OP
the sammmy 630 series is an upgrade over the 550. It's essentially a 650 with the matte screen.
Also, the new 'S' series is not 120Hz, if that matters to you (the 550 isn't either).

Why not buy a plasma and have a better, bigger picture for less.

Because I don't want all the extra power eating that comes with it. =/

I didn't notice a change in my electricity bill after my 50" Panny plasma.
