LCD's: Which are decent for gaming?

I am looking into buying a 15" or 17" LCD to replace my 17" CRT. Which current LCD's are decent for casual gaming?

Also I believe I've heard very good things about the Samsung LCDs..their response times and lack of ghosting are supposed to be pretty good.

My recommendation is to wait for FFD (search general hardware forum for a good article on it). Basically <10 ms response times + doubled brightness. and it's due out in november or december.

Does anyone have more info on the Viewsonic VG-800 18" LCD. The price is great, around $580 shipped. It has a 600:1 contrast ratio, 25ms response time, but it features only an analog connector.

Sharp LL-T1820H/B got a perfect 10 score from MaximumPC, which is why I got it. 18" LCD, 1240x1024, zero-voltage black technology (renders dead pixels nigh-invisible), 10-bit gamma, dual inputs, USB ports, .25ms response... very nice. Expensive, though, at $1,299 list (got mine for $1,229).

If you don't want to wait for FFD monitors to come out, get either the Sharp or a Samsung. Samsung was my first choice until the Sharp came out.

You're absolutely right. I love my Samsung SyncMaster 151B 15" LCD...with a 25ms pixel response time, there's practically no blurring. The picture is incredibly shart and both games and DVDs look great.

I have the Viewsonic VA520. I love it for gaming. It's a 15 incher, with a typical constrast ration of 400:1. It has a 25 ms pixel response time. It has no blurring or ghosting. The maximum refresh rate is 75 Hz at 1024x768. Everything is crystal clear on it, games/movies all look great.

I have the viewsonic VX800- nice monitor- ghosts on some games but not others- kinda strange- but doesn't seem to ghost at all on UT2003.
But as for recomending one now I too would wait for the monitors with FFD to come out.

Samsung 171S here. Best damn piece of hardware I ever bought. (I guess)

Planar can have ghosting problems, although they are pretty good, too.
Those are the only two I have experience with.

I never regretted my decision to go for the 171S.

i'm very happy with my samsung 171p. using the dvi input, this monitor is great.no blurring on any of the games i play and bright and crystal clear. another vote for samsung.

Samsung. 🙂

Planar is pretty good too, but I notice a bit of ghosting in games and DVDs - not a lot though. When you watch DVDs from a normal viewing distance it looks spectacular.

I have a dell 17" and I couldn't be happier with it. I don't know the specs, but i don't get any ghosting running at 150fps @ 1280x1024 in q3 (that's what i set my com_maxfps to). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Dell 'branded' LCDs actually made by samsung? The contrast ratio could be better though, it's at 300:1. I bought this baby a year ago, so I imagine that they are offering better solutions now.

I also own the Samsung 171S, and it's pretty much the BEST LCD that I've seen in this price range. Handles games like a charm! I heard the Planar LCDs have a bit of trouble playing CounterStrike and some other ghosting problelms in various games. If you're looking into a 15 incher, KDS' Rad5 is still a good deal - probably one of the cheapest 15" LCDs available at the moment.

I ordered the new Samsung 172T which is coming out this week/nextweek. I would highly recommend you check it out. Samsungs have a great reputation, and this one is thin-bezel, with 25ms response time and 500:1 Contrast.

I was looking at the Viewsonic VX-800, but Tom's Hardware rated the colours quite bad, which is why I started looking at the samsungs.

U can find info on the 172T here: http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?prod_id=172T-Black

I cant find the thread, could you point me to it? Thanks 🙂

Three choices:

1) Samsung

2) Samsung

3) Samsung

Make sure you get a model with 25ms response time, 500:1 contrast, 250cd brightness - 181T or 191T.

Yeah, I think Samsung is the biggest Korean success story - they've broken through the shell of bad Korean reputation 😉. IE - Hyundai, KIA.

I own a Samsung 191T and it definitely proves that LCDs can handle games. Silver...can't beat that color! It goes with all types of electronics, including my Lian Li case. 🙂

it might be out of your budget but the SGI 1600sw with a multilink adapter so you can hook it up to a nice gfx card is sweet for gaming 🙂

The SGI is old news, old technology, and overpriced. I don't think you can even get one anymore. Anyway, its value proposition is completely eclipsed by most everything on the market right now, most certainly the Samsungs.

i disagree, it might be old but it works great with games and has a sweet aspect ratio for dvds and just web browsing and other things
