ok right now i have a 21" nanao flexscan 750i . this baby is circa 1993 but its got a pretty good picture and it can do 1600x1200x75hz. weighs like 85 pounds and takes up half my desk. another bad thing is it isnt energy star compliant and uses up a lot of power.

anyways, i've been looking at LCDs and i am thinking of getting a 15" for around $300. right now i'm running the 21" at 1280x1024. i mean i kinda want more deskspace, and i think the LCD might be sharper, but i dont know what i could get for $300. anyone else with an LCD care to say what their opinions are, like on sharpness, gameability etc. my mom and my brother have 15" HP dvi / analog combo ones, but they look kinda dim and they blur a bit. they dont look as good as the one on my laptop. If you guys can come up with a good one lmk that is cheap. is NEC still good? when lcds first came out they were almost the only game in town and ucla has tons of them on campus that look pretty nice, but we cant exactly game on them.

You could get the Envision 15" LCD for $350. It is considered one of the top 15" LCDs out there.

One of our test stands at work is driven by a WinNT PC with dual 21" LCDs. They were way cool at first, but after a couple of hours of using them, you realize LCDs are not as crisp or as bright at CRTs. I'd still take a good CRT over an LCD anytime. If you want desktop space, go with multiple monitors. Get a second video card for about $75 and a decent 19" CRT for $250. I currently have one 19", and two 17" monitors on my PC. It kicks butt!

EDIT: Oh yea, search on gaming with multiple monitors. I've seen CS set ups with a front, left and right views.

I have an 18" Viewsonic VPD180. It uses the DFP digital connector. Maybe you should try an LCD with the digitial connector instead of analog VGA. Mine is very crisp, and I've been using it for a year now with no adverse effects!!!

LCDs aint worth the dough ATM. Maybe couple more years and you'll see the improvements in them but for now stick with CRTs. although its shape and looks are cool, the quality of picture isnt on-par with current top of the line CRTs. just my humble opinion if you ask me.

I have a Planar 18.1" flat panel and I have no complaints (using the digital interface). The problem is, just like with CRTs, there is a wide range of quality in flat panels. They differ in brightness, viewing angle, sharpness and contrast, etc. As for gaming, I use mine to game and I notice no ghosting at all (again, there is a wide range of quality).

It might be a while before prices in flat panels drop. Right now they are too expensive to manufacture, and the popularity of laptops is draining the supply of available flat panels.

I have a 17" Envision that I managed to get for about $480 after some creative html editing and printing, hehe...

But it looks sweet, I play games on it with my GF3 with no problems, and am very happy. I guess if I didn't buy it with a 0% credit card I would have thought longer about buying it, but you guys know how it is with "Hot Deals" ;)
