LCDs for Gaming

I currently have a Sony 19in G420 monitor which is really nice, however it is way to big for my room which i realized after my first two semesters. I want to now purchase a LCD to save space but would also like to play games on it. I heard LCDs are a lot better now, and have 16s responce times. How does that compare to CRTs. Which monitors are good? any help would be appreciated. =)

Hitachi, Planar and Benq all make models with 16 ms response times. They are all 17" and, according to reviews, have great color and contrast. I'm going to be buying the Hitachi in the next few weeks, so i can let you know personally about it then.

seriously the only space you really save is behind the monitor, unless you have an extremely shallow desk. space behind the monitor is more or less useless space.

contrast/color = suckage on lcds still uknow. i have a bit of trouble seeing peeps hiding in dark areas cuz dark colors all kinda meld together🙁 bright colors are fine😛

I agree i still prefer my tinitron!

lcds are good for dual monitor setups. one for text one for everyhting else.

when i say save space, i ment so i have more desk room in fron of the monitor. the 19in sony i have takes up my entire desk so i dont have any room to write on pape wherese the LCD is thinner. know what i mean?

I prefer the monitor farther away, I remember seeing a bunch of guys practically glued to the screen 2" away in the dorms..... it was sick.

Don't listen to this guy. People who actually do work at their desks need that space - it's the main reason LCDs were invented isn't it? Not to mention they generate way less heat and eye strain. Go get a Samsung 171 and leave the pasty dinos to their old boxes!

I have been using LCDs for over 6 years now, and I would never go back to CRTs. And I use them for everything (gaming, working, etc) and don't have a problem. And yes, the space IS a major concern, especially in a dorm room. That's one of the reasons I switched.

i guess your right, i kinda scanned the posts too quickly. his title is lcds for "gaming" u know. ive just never seen a desk that couldn't accomodate a 19" crt on one corner angled towards the seating position with ample space left over for writing. one just pushes the keyboard aside when space is required if no keyboard sliding tray is avaliable. if he's putting his crt dead center in front of him i can see why he has no space, no rectangular desk can really accomadate that setup with useful space left over.

not to mention an "gaming lcd" that rivals a 19" quality crt is very costly. then again maybe he's a student flush with cash.

1. its a G420, these things are massive
2. dorm desks arnt that big to put this monitor angled in the corner.
3. i am gonna cell the g420 and spend extra for the monitor im looking for 500 or less. =)

What type of games do you play? I'm on an LCD w/ a 25ms refresh time and I only notice ghosting in a few rare instances in FPS's, and in stuff like C&C Generals and whatnot, I can't notice it at all. I'm sure a 16ms LCD would work fine for ya. It takes most everyone a bit to get used to the look and feel of an LCD after using CRT forever, but once ya get one, you won't regret it.

For gaming, response time is everything and 16ms is about as good as it gets currently. No larger 16ms screens are available so if gaming is your #1 priority (esp. with FPS) the aforementioned would be your best choices.

I've been thinking of getting a LCD for my new computer (probably a 18- or 19-inch). I know I'm going to play alot of games, so, if I change the native resolution (probably 1280x1024) to 1024x768 or even 800x600, will it look like crap? I remember this happening to my old laptop, when changing from 800x600 (native res.) to 640x480.

It really is a good idea to stick with the native resolution in games.

I was playing at 1024x768 for quite awhile when I was told I should be using my native resolution of 1280x1024 or close as possible since some games only have 1280x960 option.

Anyways I did notice an improvement in quality.....though nothing major.
