my crappy work might force me to give up my 21" sony trinitron for a gateway 19" lcd.

Other than losing about 1" of screen real estate, how are lcd monitors for eye fatique? I'm in front of the screen almost all day so im worried about my eyes. Arent crt monitors more flexible as far as refresh rates and resolution?

I run at 1024x768 with 125 dpi text @85 hz. Is this setting a native resolution on a 19" lcd, and if not what would the text quality be like at these settings?

If you wear glasses, then the LCD will definately be better on your eyes. Overall I think it will be better because of the lack of glare that LCD monitors get.

i dont know but ever since i started using my lcd i noticed i didn't get red eye anymore. crts refresh and flicker, and that's worse for your eyes than just looking at a static image like an LCD. an LCD is about as healthy as it gets, unless the backlight hurts your eyes for being too bright. just turn it down if your eyes hurt, and you shouldn't have to worry about it.

Native resolution for a 19" is 1280X1024. I'm running 120 dpi on my 1600X1200 (Dell 2001fp).....it's good you're using large text already. Some people (like me) use 'cleartype' fonts that you can DLfrom Microsoft. It's designed specifically for LCDs. Some don't like it.....I think it helps. Regarding screen resolution and refresh, yes LCDs are more restrictive. You'll want to use native mode. Refresh rate is fixed at 60 hz. You'll also have to adjust to the extra brightness of LCDs. Some things to check if you go LCD.....stuck pixels and/or backlighting. All in all I like my 2001fp despite the restrictions. And yes I think it's easier on the eyes but everyone is different.

Edit....eh, I see you're not gonna have much choice in the matter if it's a work thing. So.....good luck!

but wait, if lcd's have a refresh rate(they do), then they refresh/flicker as well right? and on my crt's, anything under 85 hz makes me dizzy so would that apply to an lcd as well with a much lower refresh rate?

no flicker. they dont shoot electrons at a screen like crts. just a bunch of dots that dont change uless needed. think of it like a slide show, static image slightly changing over and over again. no flicker at all.

LCDs are definently easier on the eyes. My headaches are gone since I switched.

Its been medically said to use crt with at least 75hz but rec 85hz at lower resolutions esp, a nice big superbright crt with a res you are comfortable reading text on and say 100hz at that res, you will be ok for a while, i get sore heads on lappys and i not like lcd, fact is you shouldnt stare at any of them all day without timeouts.

If you work at pcs all day you prob (not saying you will deff) wear specs later in life.

Bigpop, set CLEARTYPE on for lcd and your text will imporve infront of your very eyes, please dont try on a crt though or u get sore head in short period. ;)

+1

I switched from CRT to LCD about two months ago, and I will NEVER go back. My eyes no longer feel like they're trying to drill out the back of my skull.

Nope, LCD's draw the whole screen at once. CRT's redraw the screen line by line which is what causes us to view the "wiggle" of <75Hz screens.

LCD's at 60Hz are flicker free. You cannot compare refresh rates between LCD and CRT.

Personally, I find LCD much easier on my eyes. Even though my 19" Sony Trinitron at 90-120 Hz gives an absolutely flicker free image, I still find the LCD easier on the eyes for long periods of viewing (>1 hr).

Another vote for LCD's. The brightness on my LCD was a bit intense at first and kinda irritated me in the beginning. However, after a fed days, I adjusted to it and now I would never want to go back to CRT. So, don't judge the LCD you get by your first 10 minutes of use, give it a few days. There is no flicker and the screen is completely uniform, which results in a perfectly flat, crystal clear image from corner to corner. I went from a 21" CRT to a widescreen LCD, so I also lost a little bit of vertical screen real estate, but IMO it was a worthwhile tradeoff.

I have Kerataconus (an eye disease where the corneas are misshaped) and feel most comfortable working with a 19" LCD with the larger pixel size.

I can't wear glasses, as they cannot correct my corneas. Instead I have specially fitted hard contacts, which I wear 16 hours a day. On a CRT, I had to limit the resolution to 1024 x 768 on a 19" screen, otherwise everything was too small. On a 19" LCD, I'm comfortable with 1280 x 1024, and I love the extra screen real estate. I had to use a CRT the other day and it really sucked - I felt trapped back at 1024 x 768.

Edit: And I don't know how on earth some people can use 1600 x 1200 on a 19" CRT...

I wish they would have recommended that back when I was going to school in 1983-1985, all of those headaches and eyestrain I went through from those early displays. Didn't do me any good at all. I will not run a CRT ever under 85 Hz and I believe LCD's are much easier on the eyes, CRT's even dialed in are ever so fuzzy compared to an LCD. The only thing I don't like about LCD is they run best at native resolution, which means getting a large screen will have pretty small text and can make old eyes like mine a bit crosseyed :p

I don't think there is anyone that can say CRT's are better for your eyes.

Even a HIGH end 1600x1200 @ 85/95/100hz will still have more eye strain than a decent LCD.

I have a 21" ViewSonic P810 CRT (Invar Shadow Mask. Aperture grilles are brighter) and I use a native resolution of 1152x864 at 85 hertz and I can look at the screen all day without red-eye, eyestrain or headaches. If you're a gamer go with a 21" CRT. If not the a LCD is for you.:)

My thoughts:
In general the LCDs are healthier. No radiation what-so-ever as their is no electron-gun.

However, if you are affected by low refresh rates and sit far away from the display then a CRT might be better for you, as they general allow for faster refreshes and this would reduce the strain on your eyes caused by the "flicker" associated with the low refresh rates.

How many times does it have to be repeated.

low refresh rates DO NOT CAUSE FLICKER ON LCDs.

LCDs do not refresh in the way a CRT does at all.

I've been using a dual screen setup with a CRT sitting next to an LCD for years at work and I can't say that I find one to be easier on the eyes than the other. I personally think the LCD looks better, but that's for another discussion...

I think lcd's are easier, but they are usaully much brighter than crts, which can strain after a while. However, you can just turn the brightness down, and it is very nice.

LCDs by far. Ever since I switched my eyes *never* get tired. Could never go back.
