LCD that wont work

alright, so here is my current situation... i have this old viewsonic viewpanel vg150... when i plug it into my 700mhz celeron running win2k server with an onboard graphics card it works great...

but when I plug it into my new computer p4 3.2ghz xp home, x800 xt it wont work at all...

updated the graphics card drivers but other than that i have no clue whats wrong with it...

any ideas?

I assume that since it's an older monitor it uses a 15-pin VGA connector? (i.e., not DVI)

Do you see anything at all on the monitor when you first boot up the computer?

right, its vga... when i boot up it does absolutely nothing.. shows absolutely nothing.. all it does is display its 'No Signal' message...

What monitor did you have on the X800XT before? And on what output? It might be worth trying to connect the LCD to the DVI port (with one of the DVI->VGA adapters that should have come with the video card) to see if that does anything.

Edit: I can't remember if those X800's have dual DVI outputs or not...but still try the other output if it's possible to do so.

well, currently im using a 17'' crt on a dvi>vga adaptor.. but im not including this in getting the lcd to work...

i've tried the lcd on both the dvi port and the vga port (the dvi being used with a dvi>vga adaptor)

it has a dvi and a vga output

Well I'm confused then...the monitor can't really be dead since it works on that other computer...and the X800 obviously works since you've used it before...

It almost sounds like the two cards are trying to send different signals (voltage levels maybe?) to the LCD, and it's only liking one of them...this is a completely wild guess though (and probably not correct 😛). Do you perhaps have another video card you could throw in the fast machine and see if that works?

Oh, and have you tried hooking up both monitors at the same time and forcing the video card to redetect displays (should be in the drivers somewhere)? I couldn't quite tell if you'd done that or not, by the wording of your last post.

when I hook up both monitors at the same time (my ultimate goal, for dual monitors) it wont let the CRT turn on at all.. so neither monitor works when I have them both hooked up..

and no, unfortunately I dont have another graphics card to put in this computer right now...

im just completely clueless as to why the lcd wont work so.. thats why im posting here..

bump.. still cant get this monitor to work, however i have downloaded ultramon... is there someway to completely disable the second monitor while i plug in the lcd? so it wont turn off the crt?

I think I know this.

Change the resolution down to 800x600 while its hooked up to the CRT, then switch them.

Whats more then likely happening is you are running a resolution on the 17" that your 15" cant handle so when you hook it up, its out of range.

set the resolution to 800x600 refresh rate at 60 and switched.. didn't work...
set the resolution to 1024x768 same refresh rate and that didn't work either (thats the lcds native resolution)

I just dont understand how the lcd works perfectly fine on this other computer but wont work at all on this one... so frustrating..

any other ideas or suggestions?

what do you mean by add the lcd? add it where? whenever i plug in the lcd the crt stops working until the lcd is unplugged...

if i click on the secondary monitor (which is grayed out in the display panel) and click advanced then monitors it just says 'Default monitor' and I can't click properties or anything

That sucks then. Strange that the crt will stop working when the lcd is added.
WHat shows up in display properties advanced displays?

well, for the secondary monitor the adapter is radeon x800 xt secondary... monitor is default.. for the primary monitor it shows.. plug and play monitor... x800 xt for the adapter...

they are both set at 96 DPI if that matters or would affect anything?

Since when did the x800 support a vga + dvi dual monitor combo? Dell states themselves the x800 supports only one of the two.

Dual VGA or artifical dual DVI is the only thing that it supports I think. Since other members here and other forums have tried this combo and failed using the same video card, this must be true. And yes, they also had a analog LCD. So It really makes no sense to me either.

well, im not really running that combo since im using the crt monitor with a dvi>vga adaptor... i just dont get why the lcd wont work at all on either the vga or the dvi>vga adaptor...

You might want to ask at rage3d forums. Sure is a weird problem. You are letting it boot to windows. Some LCD's wont' come on until then.
