LCD Res question

I recently bought my first widescreen. Its a Samsung SyncMaster 940bw and runs 1440x900 natively. This is dandy and looks great for newer games, but is there a way that I can run older games that dont support widescreen without just stretching out the image? Even if I had black lines on both sides of the 4:3 window, it would be better than stretching out the 4:3 into wide screen.

Sadly ATI cards don't have a centered mode on the GPU. NVIDIA and Intel adapters do though. You can tell the ATI drivers to do centered mode but it just tells the LCD to do it, so hopefully the LCD can support it.

It's possible ATI will put that feature in a future driver.

ATI drivers can do centered mode but only if the LCD supports it. (Actually I thought that was the way it was with the others as well...) For instance my LCD always stretches the picture to fit regardless of what I set the drivers to do.

Actually for some games there are little "hacks" you can do to make older games run widescreen. I haven't done it though because it really hasn't bugged me a whole lot to have it stretched and the one game I tried it on I messed something up and had no video at all, oops 😛
