LCD refresh rates and fps

I'm a long time CRT user, but I'm going to be moving into a small dorm and looking to get an LCD monitor for all around use i.e., gaming, tv and dvd watching. I've decided to go with the Samsung 193p+ at 75hz. With being a big fps fan and used to having a constant 99fps, my main concern with switching to the lcd is the loss in frame rates I will receive. I guess my question is if someone can confirm for me some information I've heard about lcds and fps:

lcd with 75Hz and with 75fps in a game, is the equivalent, and just as smooth as 99fps in a crt?

And on another forum I read the following:

i have figured out the problem and resolved all issued on this topic all by myself i know why there is a 60fps cap on win xp on lcd screens for some and there isn't for others ok here it goes if u want to get more than 60fps while running on vsync under win xp on lcd do this

if you have a lcd that supports dvi connection to your vid card switch that and plug in the analog connection to the screen cause dvi is capped forever at 60hz and there is nothing in the word anyone can do to change that
switching to from dvi to analog connections actually lets u override the hz rates thus uping your vsync fps limit from 60 to whatever u force your hz thus making better quality gaming because the fpslock of 60 is not there now i am able to play counterstrike source and halflife at 100fps steady using the vsync option and it never even budges from a 100fps sometimes it does go from 99 to 101 tho don't know why but there is no ghosting at all on a sony 17"lcd with 16ms and apsolutly no flickering the image looks the same to me when in analog but some say dvi looks better cause it's 100% digital but it's capped at 60hz if u want to play games do not use dvi it's worthless in games is only good for photoshop browsing and looking at no action things

so there u go

Has anyone heard this before? I obviously wouldn't constantly want to use Analog, but I'd put up with it while gaming. Any insight or opinions you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys.

Seeing that movies are 24fps and TV is 30fps, can anyone really see a difference between 60fps and 100fps??

I don't know the answer to your questions, but can add 2 comments:

1. It doesn't matter what signal you supply to the monitor, it can take is and convert it to whatever it wants internally. Does sending an 75KHz signal to an LCD monitor force the screen to update at 75KHz? I doubt it, but I don't know.

2. Regardless of how fast you can send a signal to an LCD, its going to be sharper than your CRT, but significantly less smooth. I have an LCD that supposedly has an 8ms refresh (equivalent to 125Hz), but its nowhere as smooth as a CRT at 60Hz. And I mean nowhere as smooth. Keep in mind that most LCD's can't even play 24fps movies without some noticeable smearing.

I certianly wouldn't be afraid to use DVI for games, but don't expect CRT type performance regardless of what you do.

LCD's fill individual Pixels and not the entire screen, it almost completly different. With an LCD all you primarily want to look for is the fill rate preferably under 20ms.

Single-link DVI operates at 165 MHz.

Bandwidth of various resolutions:

1024x768x75Hz = 58.982400 MHz
1280x1024x75Hz = 98.304000 MHz
1920x1080x60Hz = 124.416000 MHz
1600x1200x75Hz = 144.000000 MHz

Any of those settings will work on a single-link DVI connection. On your 193P+ (1280x1024), the bandwidth required to run at 75 Hz on DVI is well under the limit. I've been using 1280x1024x75Hz on DVI for 10 months now. I'm not sure where this "DVI limited to 60 Hz" conspiracy started because most LCDs are 1600x1200 or under which will run at 75 Hz just fine.

No. The LCD is running at a cap of 75 FPS with the 75 Hz refresh rate.

Thanks for the responses, guys. So basicly, I will get 99 fps, but only have I have vsync disabled? Analog doesn't have anything to do with it?

This is BS of the highest standard. 99fps on LCD still won't equal 99fps on CRT. First tearing is very noticeable with Vsync off, so unless you want that crap, keep Vsync on. Second, there is no LCD that will let you go to 100Hz to be able to see that many fps. Third, there isn't a response time fast enough to allow you to see 99fps anyway. I think the fastest is at about 60fps. Fifth, don't run LCDs out of spec.

Seeing that movies are 24fps and TV is 30fps, can anyone really see a difference between 60fps and 100fps??
I hope you're joking. Don't ever repeat this crap again. Even if you are joking, there will be people that won't pick it up and think of this as truth.

Why do people continue to perpetuate this myth?

Alright, thanks, VIAN. I guess it's just best to stick with a crt if I expect to have smooth gameplay and near triple digit fps.
