I've been enjoying my 2005fpw for a while and recently its been getting burn-ins and color splotches on the screen and am looking for a similar replacement. I do a bit of gaming and watching movies/tv on the screen so decent latency and color would matter to me so I was thinking of another similar S-IPS panel. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Budget is about max $400.

I use the 20" Dell E207WFP monitor which offers response time of 5ms. This widescreen was giving to me couple days ago. The person who owned it bought a bigger monitor. So they gave me his old one. 🙂

This the first LCD monitor I owed for desktop PC's that is. I been using a old 17" CRT monitor and I can see the change. In the overall color and how sharp everything is. lol

Lastly, NEC is selling refurbished 20WMGX2s for $139, can't beat that price. I never liked the off-angle haze on that monitor though. Also, it's glossy.

1920x1200 isn't a must, but more window space is always nice especially with aero snap, it'd be nice to load a whole webpage on just one half of the screen instead of maximizing every time. A bit of gaming is kind of, yeah, I play games so I'd like a decent response time, but I don't need like 5 ms response time that a TN panel offers, and would prefer a S-IPS.
 
I just bought the 23" e-IPS NEC monitor from buy.com:

It was down to about $275 after amazon cashbask, but the price has crept up. Still, I think its a pretty decent deal for an IPS (cheaper IPS) display from a reputable company. All the new panels are now 1080p, so you'll be hard pressed to find a non-TN 1920 x 1200 display at a resonable price. I would also prefer 1920 x 1200, but gave up. My Soyo Topaz MVA has been awesome (2+ years old), and after using it, I couldn't go back to a TN display for gaming.

And that's the bottom line, either you spend more or sacrifice something...(1920x1080 isn't so bad especially on a nice LCD-TV, lets say 32" or larger😉)

Why the drive towards 1080p panels? Wouldn't it feel like no increase of vertical space going from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080?

Are there any decent PVA panels? I read somewhere that its a compromise between TN and S-IPS, but elsewhere I heard there's an input lag which makes it unsuitable for gaming. The PVA panels definitely seem cheaper than S-IPS panels.

PVA is not a compromise, it's just a different. They were cheaper for a while, when the 2408WFP and LP2465 were up against...Apple, the 2490WUXi and a bunch of third-tier IPS screens. That was like two years ago. PVA has sort of dropped out of the market, and the only two current models that use it are the LP2275W and F2380. Dell and HP both replaced their midrange PVA units with IPS ones, NEC disco'ed their PVA line, and the second- and third- tier manufacturers dropped theirs.

Basically, you're not getting a 19x12 PVA any cheaper than the U2410 or LP2475W. The Samsung F2380 is a little cheaper than the NEC/Viewsonic 1080p IPS screens, but that doesn't help you any. If you want 19x12 then you are buying used/refurbished/ebay, waiting for a hot deal, or spending more than $400.
