I spent a lot of time reading there before I bought my bigscreen.
I second that.
DLP's are where it's at. This coming from an LCD rptv owner. LCD rptvs at the time of my purchase were about 1000$ cheaper than a dlp so that was a pro. That was enough for me to settle with the LCD tv, both DLP and LCD tv have it's pros and cons (no true black color, pixelation during fast motion, rainbow effect) so I recommend you go into a showroom where they have an LCD side by side to a DLP/plasma and compare.
One thing that's important is trash in trash out. Just get a good signal like hdtv/something equivalent to it or else you'll see some artifacts that you don't notice on a regular CRT. I've noticed anything that's above mpeg-1 (>svcd) quality should be good. Good luck and read up more on that avsforum.com.

I was shopping for a RPLCDTV/RPDLPTV. I went to avsforum for advice, and it seems like they all each have their own advantages and disadvantages.
The disadvantage of RPLCDs were blacks aren't that black, typical of an LCD
The disadvantage of RPDLPs were the rainbow effects and the clay movement.
Most people preferred the RPLCDs for $1000 less.
It seemed like there was no clear advantages of the DLP over the RPLCDs.

I really like the picture but like most LCD TVs, there is black crush. Some people are very picky about black crush but it doesn't really bother me that much. There are mods you can make to the TV which substantially improve the black levels but I haven't tried them out.
I tried to be an educated consumer and did a lot of research in stores and at forums like AVS forum before making my decision. The current crop of DLPs are very nice but a year ago, I didn't see too many good competitively priced DLPs. In fact, my ex-boss has a Samsung from last year and it looks horrible, even after I tweaked it for him. The new ones like the Samsung "Captain Kirk" look beautiful.
Although there are a lot of LCD haters out there, I think it all depends on your taste. I would just go by your eyes and wallet and forget about contrast ratios, lumens, etc.
FWIW, I bought my Panasonic 50LC13 last year for $2400. I've heard you can negotiate on the newer 50LC14 for about $2000. A 50" DLP will cost you closer to $3000. Also, by year end or early next year the new crop of LCDs with the new LCD panel from Epson will come out significantly improved contrast ratio. If you decide to buy a big screen TV, I would recommend an extended warranty. I got hosed on my $2700 Sony after it broke within 2 years and was left with nothing. My Panasonic started acting up around the 1 year mark but I have some piece of mind for the next 4 years with my extended warranty.

I have a DLP Infocus X2 projector...I will never buy a TV again. I have my satellite, DVD player,XBOX,PS2 all going through this. The picture is great and not a problem in ambient light at all. I also have a Viewsonic N6 processor to sharpen the DVD images but they also look great without it. At a cost of approx $250 per bulb with a rated 4000 hrs use, its pretty reasonable.
