LCD Owners: 800x600 - How does it look?

Thinking of replacing my CRT with an LCD, due to lack of desk space. My only requirement is screen res at 800x600, text sharp and graphics true. That res looks like #$%& on my laptop, so I'm not sure whether I should go any farther with this.

I live 180 miles from the nearest BB/CC, and I'm iced in at the moment, so I'd appreciate any help in narrowing down what to look at when/if I do get there. TIA.

As far as prices go I would definetely opt for a 17" LCD. As far as picture quality goes their 'awesome'. I forget what exactly BB or CC have for a selection of LCD's, but you should be able to take a look at them once you get there. The resolutions on those look fine. I have mine at 1024x???(i forget the numbers) on my 15" NEC Multisync 1560+ monitor and it's just fine. I will probably in the future upgrade to a 20" LCD because i love the space it saves and how sharp they look.

Good luck!

my 710t looks like sh*t on 800/600 res, and most 17inch monitors are 1280/1024, so youd probably be better getting a 15" because their recommended resolutions are 1024/768

they don't sell lcds with 800x600 native resolutions now. the lowest would be 1024x768 on 15" lcds.

As you probably are aware, LCDs each have a native resolution based on the size of their pixel element. Running a LCD at any lower resolution will always look like azz, period. Even 15in are usually 1024x768. I reccomend that you buy a 15in or 17in LCD and use larger fonts/icons as necessary. Windows has a plethora of font and icon sizes that can even please my nearly-blind grandmother.

TBH, anything other than the native resolution on an LCD is gonna look like sh!t.

I don't know why the OP would want to run at 800x600...

But if he TRULY needs it, he can get an LCD with a native res of 1600x1200... It will scale to 800x600 very nicely.

Just for sh1t$ and giggles I tried it on my Dell 2001FP which is 1600x1200 native... 800x600 actually looks "native" too because it scales exactly to 4 pixels to 1.

I've been wondering about this myself. I read the AT guide to LCD's, and part of another site's absolutely massive guide (xbit labs I believe).

I have very bad vision and am currently using an old CRT (CTX brand, aka Chuntex) at 800x600.

The computers at school have either Dell 19in LCD's or some have HP LCD's. Both look very good to me at various resolutions (haven't tried gaming on them; just internet / Word). However they are usually set at 1280x1024 and the text usually is too hard to read (too small). So I down it to perhaps 1024x768 and then I can see perfectly, and it looks fabulous (also really does seem easier on the eyes... or at the very least just different since I spend all my home PC time on this CRT).

So... I guess I haven't really suffered from the theoretical ill-effects of using non-native resolutions. Blame it on my eyesight perhaps?

Ok, seriously, anything below 1280x960 will make the icons look huge. But then again, you can adjust the icon size. No, don't do 800x600.

You need a 19" if you like big text. You DO NOT want to run non native resolution..it's blurry and looks like garbage.

17" 18" and 19" all have 1280x1024, and the 19"ers will display biggest text and graphics. Just like 800x600 scaled over a larger area if you know what I mean.

this is a good one for cheap

It seems that most mid-range 19" LCDs have 1280x1024 max (native). Would there be a noticable difference in quality / readability buying one with 1600x1200 native? Keep my above post in mind... I have to scale down the monitors at school because the default settings usually are too hard to read for me at a comfortable distance. I'm imagining 1600x1200 text being tiiiiiiny!

When doing office work and web browsing I like big text (only games IMO are for high res) for example I like 1024x768 on a 17" CRT and I find 19" LCD's to be comparable to that in scale. 18 and 17's the text looks too small IMO. If you get a 19" with 16x12 it will look tiny, aweful.

I have this 19" http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=24-163-118&depa=0

IMHO - Buy a 17in and use large fonts/icons - which makes the resolution issue moot. Windows includes accessibiliy features, one if which is F*in huge fonts/icons/features etc.

! just tried running my SDM-HX93 at 800x600 (native 12x16) It looked like #@&%*! Now I have to resize all my windows. You guys suck. 😀

how are you running 16x12 on that?

Thanks for the info, everyone. I'm using the 800x600 to reduce eye strain, as I'm looking at this monitor for 40-50 hours per week. Heredity tells me I'll be looking at glasses in a few years, so I'm trying to avoid that as long as possible.
