LCD or CRT? UPDATE *snagged CRT*

I've decided to pick up a new display for myself as a christmas present. I'm torn between the popular Dell 2001FP 20.1" LCD which I can get for $599 shipped, or the NEC FP2141-SB 22" CRT for $599 shipped.

The CRT is much more flexible on resolutions, and it will do 2048 x 1536 @ 85hz. The Dell is nice as well, but I've heard some horror stories about dead or stuck pixels and a "screen door" effect, as well as some burn in issues.

I've got the space on my desk for the NEC, but I've always wanted a nice LCD too. I'm a bit concerned with the Dell though that I will need a monster card to run some newer games @ the native res. I'm not a huge gamer, but during the winter, I tend to play more than the rest of the year.

What do you guys think?

:)

Thanks for all the opinions...I got the 22" CRT.

If you have space for it, go with the CRT. I have the 19" version of that one and it rocks.

I still use a CRT for gaming. LCDs are just not flexible enough on resolutions to satisfy me.

Hopefully soon, LCDs will be able to scale as well as CRTs and that will change.

I'm having the same problem atm, except I ordered the 2001FP already. But I'm gonna cancel it, cause my videocard can't handle HL2 or any of the games I play comfortably at 1600x1200 (it was an impulse buy). However, I'm gonna go with a 19" CRT, cause it's x-mas time and I need the money for gifts (also why I cancelled the 2001FP, even though it was < $600 shipped).

I'm probably going to get the viewsonic G90FB (1600x1200 is optimal res on it), and it's free shipping from newegg. And now I'm running late for class, lol.

If they let you grow up, you just might.

I faced this same choice not long ago. You might too once you make your own money and stop suckling at your momma's teat.

CRT, no question! :) They look better than LCDs IMO, the black levels are definitely better. Plus they don't have a native resolution so they look good at any rez...

Just to throw a wrench in the works...

I already have two 19" AG CRT's in the house, Sony tubes, which I run my desktop @ 1280 x 960 @ 100hz, and most games I either run @ 1280 x 960 @ 100hz or 1600 x 1200 @ 85hz. Surprisingly, HL2 and Vampire : Bloodlines both run fine @ 1600 x 1200 on my 9800 Pro, but I need to shut off AF and AA...Doom 3..another story.

I could possibly get the 2001FP and use the CRT when I have some games I can't play @ the native res.

Another question...

How about the Viewsonic 22" CRT? It's a little weaker on the res options, but it has BNC hookups which I wish the NEC had. I still have a BNC cable around here somewhere...

Edit:

What's Dell return policy on LCD's with stuck and/or dead pixels? I did some research, but I didn't find anything specifically describing that situation.

Ok...third option. ;)

I could just keep the CRT's I have now, and pick up a 6800GT. I just hate paying $400 for a video card..

CRT definately. 2048 x 1536 @ 85hz is a great resolution and I run it on my 21" trinitron. I had a laptop with a dead pixel and it really sucked.

id go with the CRT. if you have the space, it by far a better option for gaming.

<--- running a dell 21" CRT 1920 x 1440 @ 85Hz

I'd get the CRT.
Looks great in any resolution, no dead pixels, no refresh rate problems (tearing).

That is a possibility at some point, but for now, it's only one or the other. I could get the CRT now, and pick up a 6800GT in Febuary when the tax money comes in...prices might be closer to the $300 level then...

Almost everyone in this thread has said CRT, but the LCD is winning?

I would say LCD, but that's because I dont' do anything that requires the acuracy of CRT for color, nor do I do any gaming. And when I do game, I like FPS/driving games, and it's been fine for me, I run 8x6 most of the time (gf4 4600). The only benefit the CRT has in this case is the higher res...

I wish desktop LCD's had what notebooks had.. high res and whatever xtrabright screen tech each company respectively has. Oh, heat and space are a concern for me as well.

I'd go for the LCD for sure... :)

I like my CRT though... Like Inguyen states... the higher res is cool, but other then that... LCD for my next monitor!

Another vote for the CRT

Well, the NEC is a 22", but it's only 20" viewable...so basically the same as the LCD.
