This could be due to "dirty" power. This can affect CRT's from fuzzy pictures, ghosting to flickering. Investing in a good line conditioner (power filter) will solve this. LCD's are not subject to this.
There are positives and negatives to both LCD's and CRT's. CRT's give better contrast and colors, especially truer blacks and have great refresh rates as well as scaling well at different resolutions. Better viewing angels as well. LCD's have perfect geometry and are not subject to dirty power affecting picture quality. They are also conserve space and are easy on the back. Cheaper LCD's have the screen door effect, dithering (can't produce every color properly), and ghosting due to slow response rates.

Profits. It's now cheaper to produce an LCD than a CRT. Not to mention you can pack more LCD's than CRT's in the same amount of space and it's lighter which means less cost for fuel to transport it and you can transport more at a time.
