guys,
is it time to upgrade to an lcd? is the extra price worth it or are crts still the way to go?
I heard that the lcd's are alot better for your eyes

for the price of one 15" lcd, i can definetely get a quality 19" like the samsung 900nf. but i'd like to keep my eyes from getting worse too....I'm losing sleep over this one

can anybody help me out?

I'd jump on the 900nf... unless you really move around and would need to transport your monitor and computer. But in my case, I move from home and school, and I have to lug around two 19" Hitachi's.

What do you use your computer for? If its games, you have almost no choice but to go with the CRT. For everything else, I'd consider the LCD if you can live without the extra display size.

go with CRT. IMHO the price for the LCD is still too high. and CRT has better performance, but it draws a lot more power though :D

I have the 900NF, and I can say that it hands down beats out any LCD on image quality. Plus, you'll save about $1000 for the same size screen that you can waste at the brothel or synagogue or wherever you spend your free time. :)

Some things to consider;

LCD produces a lot less heat and consumes a lot less electricity. This can save you money 2 ways.

The ultimate decision should be based on what you plan to use the monitor for. I went with CRT because I use my PC for entertainment (DVD/Divx) and gaming. If what I mostly did was web browsing, photo editing etc.. I would have considered an LCD.

I bought a 17" Samsung LCD a couple months ago for a bit over $1000. I'd wanted one for years, so was really looking forward to enjoying it.

Had it a week before I returned it and bought a 19" CRT. The size of the LCD was fine, but I just couldn't stand how "slow" it was in comparison to a CRT. And no, I'm not referring to refresh rate... and yes, it was an active matrix LCD...

Also, the LCD's inability to display true black was somewhat annoying.

I've seen a bunch of different LCDs in action and they are great. One thing that stands out is I don't think there is opportunity for image flaws, ie. convergence, geometry, fuzzy corners,...

But I would only say get one if your pocket is full and you won't be gaming. I have 2 computers, 1 for gaming and the other for general purpose. If I had the extra cash, I'd get an lcd for the general purp. computer.

Go for the 19', save yourself the $$, won't be too bad on the eyes as you don't have to be so close to your monitor anyway. I've had a similar decision to make, and decided that size matters and 900NF is the choice, until LCDs become really affordable(ie same as CRTs:D). As long as its in a permanent position(dont wanna be breaking spines now;))

I've got a 21' Viewsonic ctr and a 18' Viewsonic LCD. Color slightly truer on the ctr, and seems a bit deeper as well. I would say that for gaming, professional level graphics designers, CTR is the best. LCD is great on the eyes. I can sit for hours in front of an LCD without much fatique.

Other concerns for me is I'm a bit worried about sitting in front of an electron gun...no matter how much lead there is in front of it. Anyone else noticed that the trend in certain cancers like lymphoma, etc increased in direct correlation with the popularity of TV? I'm probably slightly paranoid.

I say the LCD, though I'd get a 17" before the 15" if you could spare the cash. I want one for the size and technology.

I have an 18.1" LCD screen and it has great image quality, IMO better than conventional monitors. Make sure you choose the right one, though. Mine is digital and connects via the DVI-D interface. Some connect to the video card w/ a standard VGA cable and the quality is abolutely terrible. What brand LCD were you planning on buying?

BTW- If you choose the LCD, and it connects via the DVI-D connection, make sure to remember that if you don't have one already, you will have to purchase a video card that has the DVI output, such as the Hercules 3D Prophet III or the Hercules 3D Prophet II GTS Ultra.

i'd wait. wholesale prices on 17" LCDs are hitting $700 from what i'm hearing, so it should trickle down to consumer soon.

<<LCD produces a lot less heat and consumes a lot less electricity. This can save you money 2 ways. >>

I only see one way. How can less heat save you money? If you are talking about lower air conditioning costs, then you have to consider higher heating costs too.

<<If what I mostly did was web browsing, photo editing etc.. I would have considered an LCD. >>

LCD is crap for photo editing. Colors are never right. Don't even think about it. I don't know anybody who does serious photo editing on a LCD.

There are only two concrete advantages to LCDs: uses less energy and uses less space.

For any serious application, go for a CRT.
