LCD mounted to case...

I was discussing public hotspots with a friend and we were noting how they're not really a place to game unless you have a laptop. That got me thinking...

What if you mounted a flat-panel screen to the side of a case, made holsters/compartments on the other side for your keyboard, mouse and cables had a handle at the top to carry everything?

Has anyone tried anything like this?

True, but you can still build a mid-tower gaming system with a decent flat-panel for much less than a comparable laptop.

Part of what you're paying for with a laptop is its compact size. What if you were willing to carry a bit more weight around so that you could save some $$$ but at the same time, wanted it to be a fully-portable solution?

edit:

Companies sell LCDs for gaming consoles that snap right onto the frame. Couldn't one do the same for a mid-tower case?

Yes.
Maximum PC mag., for their 2004 Dream Machine installed a LCD touch screen: Earth LCD XLK-5002T ($795) (6.5 inch TFT LCD) into a Silverstone Nimiz SST-TJ03 case.

I'm still suprised, however, that nobody has marketed the idea of a computer case with an LCD screen on the side for the mass-market. That guy should go into business for himself.

Oddly enough, it's tough to find a 15" LCD these days that has a refresh rate faster than 25ms... not really suitable for gaming.

Still, there is a 16ms 17" GEM TFT on sale @ Fry's/Outpost this week for $169.99 after $50 MIR.

I wonder how difficult it would be to do something with that screen similar to what Defyant did on his fully custom rig.

I'm sure it could be done. You might need to open up the LCD though, and figure a way of bolting the back of the monitor's casing either directly to the case, or else to some kind of releasable mounts.

I would just take the LCD panel off the base (assuming you can like on most samsungs) and mount the LCD on the outside of the case as if mounting it on a wall (again, I know samsungs come with holes in the back of the panel for this purpose). This keeps the LCD and heat outside of the case. As for how practical this idea is? IDK, there are a lot of factors.

That thing sure is pretty. It almost looks as though a team of people put it together. I don't think I could do it . . .
