LCD Monitors

Does anyone know how durable LCD monitors generally are? Are they more likely to break, or less likely to break than a CRT monitor?

I ask because I'm debating on how important the warranty is on a LCD monitor.

I am currently trying out both a KDS Rad5 15" LCD monitor, and a Microtek c586p LCD monitor. Both seem very similar for text/photo quality and games. However the KDS has a well defined warranty stated on their own web page, and the Microtek says its a 3 year warranty, but does not state anywhere what all it covers.

The KDS I have has 3 stuck pixels (all noticable), and the Microtek has only one, that really isn't even noticable.

LCDs are very fragile. I've also jumped into LCD wagon this month. The first one I tried was also KDS Rad-5, then Rad-5s. Right now I have Rad-7s, and keeping it for good. Of three LCDs, I've had none with dead pixels.
By the way, where did you buy it from? If you have Sam's Club where you are, go there. I've payed $579+tax for the Rad-7s.

Both monitors I have are from the Office Depot deal with 20% off, plus a rebate. The Microtek would come to about $214 and the KDS around $25 more. Just trying to decide which to keep. I did call Microtek after posting my message, she claims its a 3 years parts and labor warranty, for all 3 years... *if* thats true it would be better than the KDS warranty which only covers parts and labor for the first year, just labor the remaining 2 years.

Although the KDS warranty is a cross-shipment and the Microtek one isn't.

I personally wouldn't recommend a LCD if you do a lot of gaming. Also, LCD's seem to be very prone to dead pixels (i personally know of 5 people that all have LCD's and dead pixels, for some reason though, their laptops don thave dead pixels). I say take the money you spend on a 15 incher LCD and buy urselg a high quality 19 inch CRT.

I would like to go LCD but I am worried about ghosting under gameing and also dead pixels. can someone point me to one that is good for gameing and good quality

hugs

Both the KDS Rad 5 and the Microtek C586p are excellent monitors and good for gaming from my testing. I haven't really noticed any ghosting in games. I am replacing my 4 year old 19" monitor with a 15" LCD, as they seem 100x smaller than my 19" monitor, plus I will be moving next year sometime and don't care to lug a 19" with me.

My 19" monitor really only measured 17" for viewing area anyways.

According from what I have read, for dead pixels, its mostly luck whether you get one that has them. Supposedly most do have a few, I guess it depends how noticeable they are. Some only show up on certain colors.

Consensus is mixed on LCDs for gaming. Some say the ghosting bothers them to the point of distraction, others barely at all. Look for at least 25ms response time and good brightness 200+ nits. Because the experience is so individual under gaming scenarios, and because few reviews deal with gaming, it seems generally advised to take your favorite game to a computer store and try it out on a monitor. Of course, thats a bit unfair if you are planning on buying on-line but...

There is another thread in this forum with a discussion of this issue.
