Hi everyone.

I'm new to the forum and I need to pick an LCD monitor to go with my new PC.

I want to stick to 1280x1024 mainly because although the PC'll be able to cope with it I don't want to have to watch it and for some games I'd rather have the AA/AF etc.

Mostly I'm not going to be playing fast paced games BUT I don't want to see any ghosting etc when I do play them - assume cash isn't a problem please ;). The main use is still gaming though - 8bit panel would obviously be best with a good response time as well.

Any ideas?

I'd recommed either the Samsung 710/712N since you will be gaming and they have an excellent response time of 12ms. You could also do a search in the Hot Deals forum for a 17" Princeton LCD that Newegg has on sale. Either would be a great choice.

Just go for the 2001FP anyways. It still looks great in non-native resolutions. 1600 x 1200 is so sweet for any kind of non-gaming use.

I recommend the 19" sony hs94p. Games are simply amazing on it. It doesn't have as high of contrast ratio and as many colors as the samsung 193p (16.2 million vs samsung's 16.7), but for gaming the crt like look of it because of the glass and superior response times of this display more than make up for it. I've played half life 2, doom 3, warhammer 40k: dawn of war, far cry, ut2k4, morrowind, and many other games on it and they all look and play amazing. Unless you have SLI 6800 ultras or something I think a 1280x1024 display is the way to go for a mainly gaming lcd as you'll always be able to achieve great framerates and most of the time have full AA and AF on. Either the sony or the viewsonic 912b which uses the same panel as the sony are the two best gaming lcds out there right now for the money imho.

I quite like the Sony HS94P. Is there any ghosting? And the colours look good?

I think the Dell is really just too big.. I'm going to have a 6800 Ultra but still, I'd rather not play with 40 fps and no AA/AF instead of at 1280x1024.

I'm in the UK so getting hold of the newer models can be hard to find sometimes.

As verified by many members here the 2001FP looks great at non-native resolutions. Mine does and I'm very happy but I shouldn't promote a 20.5" if you don't want it.

I really like the Sony's, I've been looking at the HS74P. I just can't get past the reflective screen. When I looked at the display unit at BB I can literally see my face reflecting in the screen....I just think that would get annoying quick.

The Sony seems quite good - I don't think the reflective screen would be too bad. It seemed OK when I saw it in a shop.

Is it OK for ghosting and picture quality?

It is one of the best out there for ghosting. The hs94p was my first lcd and that was what worried me moving from my 21" sony crt was ghosting but it's so minor it's unoticeable in first person shooters on this display. Like I said the samsung 193p will have slightly better image quality at the cost of response time and a higher price than the sony. As long as you don't do serious photoshop work or anything though then the sony would be fine. For games, internet browsing, and watching dvd's it's awesome.
