Hi I recently bought the Dell 2000FP LCD monitor. I am just curious on the life expactancy of LCds monitors. I normally set the monitor to turn it off after 20 mins. However, I want to know if I turn it on and off 5 times a day will it curtail its life expantancy? In addition, will it be better for me to turn it off right away after I used it while leave the computer on or to let the clock turn it off by itself? Just curious.

Hmm... Not sure. The component most likely to die first would probably be the backlight which, IIRC, is just a Cold Cathode or something similar. I think that is more affected by up time than cycling so it would be better to leave it off whenever you can.

Since LCDs are still pretty new and the technology is changing so fast, its hard to say when they would die. I've seen quite a few 486 laptops but I would say that ~ 50% of those have died. So thats the timeframe your looking at.

I think the fluourescent tubes may be replaceable if need be. Not a real authorized service item but it should be doable.

I think they last tens of thousands of hours. By the time the thing dies it will have probably become obsolete anyways.
