LCD Monitor -- off brands are they worth even looking at

I am in the process of buying an LCD for general use including gaming. Depending on where you look there are a variety of cheaper offerings. Specifically I am looking at these monitors and was wondering if anyone had any experience with some of the off brands:

Sceptre DCL9A $279 at
http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...dpNo=1205042&CatId=170

Proview PL-913S $359 at
http://microcenter.com/single_...html?product_id=181980

Acer AL1912 $319 at
http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...=1105660&sku=A179-1900

I am comparing these with the Benq FP931 and hopefully soon the FP937, and the NEC LCD92V.

All of the above are 16ms screens and from speaking to salespeople locally it seems they share the same lcd as many of the larger manufacturers. If so, does it pay to spend the extra on the name brand? I wouldn't ask but none of the brands above can I find any reviews or opinions on that I trust.

I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

i've been thinking the same.

i actually read on tom's and another site that the acer and proview were good models. i don't know if they belong in the no-name category so much as less=frill or name brand recognition as the samsungs, etc.

i'm focusing on a 19 with the specs i want in my price range, the acer and proview seem pretty competitive. haven't finished researching all the different warranties/pixel policys and such tho.

also, ben-q seems pretty reasonable.

and just re-read, you didn't say no-name but rather off-brand. good classification.

also, remember that there are only like 5 actual panel manufacturers.

Yes

My understanding is the panels are made by:
Proview -> Samsung
Acer -> AU Optronics
Sceptre -> Not sure as I can't find anything on these guys but they are also the cheapest

Where I am having the problems is finding any issues or benefits associated with buying from their name brand counterparts versus the integration with these off branded products

If that's true about the proview, i'm quite disapointed in samsung, i've seen a 14" proview LCD, and it looks like crap. washed out image, might as well not even have a viewing angle other than like 2 deg. Overall, I'd call it just plain bad.

I have my doubts about the Hyundai 8ms response time. Maybe it's just the time rising or time falling (not both)? Samsung just came out with an 8ms response time monitor, so it'd be shocking to see Hyundai out with one already. I bought a Sceptre X9G-Gamer 19" LCD on NewEgg for $427 after shipping and it'll arrive by Jan. 31. It dropped in price by $20 after I bought it :-(

Monitor specs are good, it's bright (400 cd/m2), has a lightening fast response time (12ms -- I'm hoping it's true) and good resolution (1280 x 1024) for a monitor with S-Video and video connectors. Also has DVI-D. Best of all, it's dirt cheap. Still taking a risk on the brand though. How is the quality of Sceptre monitors? I'll report back once I get my hands on this one.

definitely keep me posted on that sceptre bro, i'm really liking that.

i don't really doubt the hyundai specs but i've seen others list just te rise or fall and not the both, so you may be right there.

I am also very interested in the Sceptre. It is just hard to get too excited about something you can't see first. Please do let us know how you feel it compares after receiving it...

To the OP:

The Hyundai at NewEgg is $379. It is advertised as having an 8ms response time. Further research on Hyundai's website reveals that it is a very good monitor. It also has DVI, which the $359 monitor you're looking at doesn't have. For only $20 more, you could DVI and an 8ms response time. It's my responsibility to reccomend that monitor to you.

Thanks for the response. My concern with the Hyundai is the 16.7mil color and 8ms. I didn't think that it was possible, if so it should be the perfect monitor. I am going to email Hyundai and see how they respond. I will post their response.

Wow, Hyundai responded in less than 2 hours: Here is their response. I will follow up to make sure that indeed it isn't a TN displaying 16.2mil

Hi Sean,

Someone had a simular question to yours and our
factory's response was as follow. 8ms response
time is for both rise and fall, not just one.
If this infromation still does not answer your questions,
please let Dylan(minkb@hyundaiq.com) know and he can assist you further.

"LCD monitor can displays 16.7 million.
True Color means 2^32(4294.9 million colors / 32bit)
But, TFT-LCD panel is working with 24bit. So, 2^24=16.7 million colors.

All TFT-LCD panels, eve\n from other brands, have same spec of color display.

Anyway, human beings cannot tell the color difference over 65536 colors(=2^16)."

Thank you,

I got a Pixo 17" LCD monitor from Newegg for $200 after rebates. VGA connector only but pretty good performance. I just needed it for a second computer I had set up for my wife and daughter to play games with. Excellent graphics and well worth it.

I like Hyundais. already used a few for work, and they are very inexpensive, and very sharp (nice picture)

I like them, so if you consider them an off brand, yes off brands are worth looking at :)
