LCD Monitor - I want one that does everything?

Finally have my new computer all built:

Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
P4 3.0c
1GB Muskin 3500 Level 1
Gainward FX5900

Nice and zippy

But now I want to get a solid LCD monitor to complete the whole picture.

Had thought that the Samsung 172X was the answer to my needs, butttttttt....

I primarily need a monitor that will be excellent for office/business use. For me that means one that I can run in non-native mode, 800x600

It also has to be able to handle video editing, although my needs are not too strident on this front.

And finally, for those 'off' business hours, I want a monitor that can do some gaming. BUT, I don't do any 1st person shooter stuff, the motion that the 3D of 1st person shooter gaming makes me motion sick, I know bummer, but it is reality for me.

So the gaming environment is on the RTS side of the fence, like Command and Conquer: Generals Zero Hour for example.

I have done as much reading up on this as I can, especially the postings of HeroOfPellinor (thanks for the feedback) on his recent purchase of the Samsung 172X. Needless to say, the 172X is a huge question mark right now.

I have also read some other postings that state that as the Samsung 172X is a "PVA" monitor, that by default it will suck for gaming. I am not sure what that refers to?

Finally, any one having any luck with the 172X?

Or, who out there has a LCD monitor that they have had good luck with that is using it about the same as my needs listed above?

I am very happy with my Samsung 192t. C&C Zero Hour looks and plays great on it. As do all the other games I play (America's Army, Call of Duty, Star Wars Galaxies and many others). The image on this monitor is great. I prefer to do everything on this LCD as opposed to my 21" CRTs.

I haven't tried scaling text/office type stuff to 800x600 with it. But why would you want to? Are you using some sort of old legacy app or something? I do lots of work on this monitor and have never had to change from my normal desktop resolution (1280x1024 in this case) for office type apps. If you were looking at 17" LCDs the 192t may be out of your price range at just below $700, but its a fantastic monitor.

I play swg and sw:kotor on a Dell 2001FP 20.1 inch 16ms LCD, and it looks spectacular. An added benefit is that since it's native at 1600x1200, it is also native at 800x600, cause it's exactly half the dimensions, so it's not blurry at all when you run in 800x600. That's great for most games, and with a decent graphics card you can run 1600x1200 on any game the most demanding FPS games (which you said you don't play anyway! )

It's $999 at dell home, but it's often marked down to $799 or even $750 in dell small business. (presently it's $899 in Home, $999 in small business). Ebay might have some too.

Interesting, it makes sense about the 1600x1200 and the exact 800x600 mode.

To answer another post, I need to go to the 800x600 on the office/business side of things, because I spend alot of time in front of spreadsheets. And, to be honest my eyes just ain't what they used to be.

I enjoy the 'real estate' as much as the next, but if the smaller print results in eye strain, it is not worth it.

I will take a closer look at the Samsung 192T.

Do you happen to know what the response time is?

How does it do playing DVD movies and the such?

Most spreadsheet apps will let you zoom in and out. You can make the text as big as you want without changing your resolution. In Excel just hold Ctrl and scoll the wheel on your mouse. Or you can select something from a dropdown menu.

Get the Dell 2001FP over the Samsung 192t if you can catch one of those Dell sales. It's better LCD with slightly bigger screen, higher resolution, and faster refresh rate. If you're looking to spend little less and little smaller screen, I would suggest Dell 1800FP or newer 1801FP. It's great LCD and can be picked up for under $500 new.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

First, as far as the comment about spreadsheets zooming in and out. Correct. However, any new spreadsheet, or any other/old spreadsheet that one opens up, opens at the default zoom, of normally 100%. And if Windows was set at something other than 800x600, then everytime I muck with a spreadsheet I would have to change the zoom.

I know this sounds a tad unreasonable, but in my line of work, I literally deal with 10-50 separate spreadsheets at any given session.

Plus, normally I run with 10-15 applications all up at the same time, and most of those don't give me option of changing "zoom".

Hence, my strong desire and need for a LCD monitor that can run at 800x600 with as little distortion as possible.

I did go over to Dell and check out the pricing on the 2001FP. Right now it stands at $900

That is a little steep for what I was looking to spend on a monitor. But, I will keep checking the pricing, and see what happens.

If I could actually see it for $750, I just might have to bite.

Dell 1800FP. I got mine a few days ago. WOW. zero dead pixels, CLEAR, SHARP, great colors, gamable, thin black bezel, just sweet. I love it.

where are you getting the 1801FP under 500 new? I've seen a few for 469 on ebay, brand new, but they rape you on shipping ($60 usually)
