LCD + games?

Well I'm off to college in 6 months and my 17" monitor will take up too much space, so I'd like to invest in a 17" LCD monitor. The question is, will they still work with games?

I play them every so often when I've got some free time to kill, a bit of everything, and I've seen the phrase ghosting used a lot. From what I've read ghosting is when the pixels don't refresh fast enough and you get a blur effect.

So can any LCD users comment on what playing games is like? And perhaps recommend a good 17" one? I've got up to ~$500 for the right one.

Its tolerable, some are worse than others.

i played UT2k3 on a dell 15" lcd and it was actually pretty good, for what its worth

I "downgraded" from a 21" CRT to a 19" LCD for school. Very happy. There are now 17" LCDs that have sub 20 ms response times... do a search and you're sure to find the models.

I am a hardcore gamer who plays anything from Warcraft 3 to CS and I play them on my Planar PX171M with 16ms response time.

No ghosting at all and gotta love the image quality of DVI connection

I bought the 17" Hitachi LCD 175SXWB 16 ms response time, it's awesome. No ghosting whatsoever including UT2003

I just got it and it is sweet. Looks great watching Driven on DVD. No ghosting at all.

I don't believe so as far as all practical purposes is concerned. You won't need better as long as you are using DVI. I use my 1800FP w/dvi and I absolutely love it.

Congratulations, another mis-informed person.
Contary to popular belief, LCDs are, in many people beliefs, just as good as CRT, depending on the model of LCD.
My LCD for example, is far better than any other CRT that ive used for game, and has no ghosting/lag/trails. The image is far sharper than CRTs.

Contary to popular belief, LCDs are, in many people beliefs, just as good as CRT, depending on the model of LCD.

Every review of LCD monitors I have read don't claim that at all. Most state LCDs are getting quite good but they're not yet at the standard of CRTs when it comes to color-rich, motion graphics.

At no point did i say reviews. I said "in many peoples beliefs", there is a difference.
Alot of people who critisise TFTs for their gaming quality/image quality, have not even used a modern day TFT. This isnt a dig at anyone here, cos i dont know what monitors you lot have.

I can say the same for my TFT.
Vice City, UT2003, C&C Generals all look far better on my TFT than any other CRT that ive used. Even my mates say that, and they have some fancy 21" monitor thats ment for CAD usage.

Alright, after shopping around some I'm liking the NEC MultiSync LCD1760V.

One thing troubles me though: from what people have said, it has trouble at different resolutions. I still like playing some of my old games now and then, and some of them run at 640x480 or 800x600 res. Will this be a problem?

No. The only thing is that they wont be as crisp an image as at the TFTs native resolution.

I replace a Hitachi 19" 753 Superscan CRT with my new 17" Hitachi LCD 175SXWB LCD and I'll tell you this, I thought my CRT was really great looking but the LCD blows it away with much better color and saturation. I really was doubtful until I received mine.
I wouldn't hesitate buying a good LCD, Just don't buy a cheap one, do research on it first.

If you want both DVI and analogue interface then get the NEC 1760NX version.

1760NX specs .Remember they do a black version as well(1760NXBK) .

I play on a Dell 20" LCD and it's fine. Also have a Planar 18" LCD on another system and it's fine too for games. Just understand you probably will want a video card that can support whatever game you're playing in its native screen resolution.

I hate looking at CRT screens, will never go back.
