LCD for gaming yet?

Another question, how the heck do you clean LCD screens? For my CRT i just take a soft tissue and wipe it... it works great, gets rid of the smudges and stuff.

I was actually wondering, since its native resolution is 1280x1024, would i have to run games at that resolution? Right now on my CRT im running games at 1024x768... if i run them at 1280x1024 would the fps drop by alot?
You dont have to run them at 1280x1024. You can run them at lower resolutions, but it wont look as sharp. As for the frame rate drop, it depends on the rest of your system, and the game itself.

Thats what i do with my TFT, and it hasnt harmed it thus far.

Do a search for the Dell 1800FP. I have (2) 1800FP's w/ a paper spec response time of 30ms, and I do not see any ghosting while playing GTA3 VC, UT2K3, or watch DVD movies. Hands down these are some of the best LCD's currently on the market with a nice price vs. performance ratio.

John,

Do you see any issues with the BGR configuration of the pixels on the 1800FP (vs. the more common RGB)?
I have one too, but notice that even with ClearType tweaked for BGR, text is still not as clear as my 22" Apple Cinema Display (yes, on my PC).

I'd love to use the 1800FP as a second display, but I don't think I can get a good image for text when ClearType is enabled... one monitor with a RGB config, the other with a BGR config.

19" LCDS with 16ms response time have been announced, when they will be released is anybody's guess! The first I have seen advertised is here. A-Data is not a new company and is producing some rather impressive memory...check it out!

Cadaver, I've tried BGR using the web based cleartype tool and it still looks ugly no matter what option I choose.

If you increase your resolution to 1280x1024 but if your machine is fast enough and your video card is good, most games will be more than playable even though the frame rates will not be as high.

no, not really, they aren't quite there yet still for hardcore gamers. inferior contrast and refresh. stated pixel response is for black to white, not color to color which is far slower. not to mention being stuck at a native resolution, thats bad if you don't always have the top video cards to handle that with all the goodies on. best to get one monitor of each kind. thats why we have dual monitor outputs now days🙂 best of both worlds.

if you already have a sufficient crt I would keep it till next year and wait for prices to drop on the LCD's
they are nice but a little expensive

I think I have something to offer here. I just got a VP171B for my friends system. It is still sitting in my room here, and I have been using it for a while (evaluating). Compared to even my lowly Viewsonic A90 it isn't all that great. I don't understand what people are saying when they talk about "I don't know how I could ever go back to a CRT". You still cannot beat a good CRT for gaming, no way.

I found with the VP171b it was too bright, and since it was so sharp it perfect for everything but gaming/movie watching. I noticed that the contrast/brightness just couldnt be adjusted right to make it even somewhat comparable to my CRT. Another thing is not every game supports 1280x1024 and having to use 1024x768 isn't nice. This is my take on the LCD/CRT debate so far.

Get an LCD if you say yes to most of the following:
would you really like the extra space on your desk?
would you like a lighter monitor?
Is browsing the web/typing more important to you than gaming?
Do you have enough money to get one?
Are you willing to sacrifice the movie playing/gaming power of your CRT for the above Pros of LCDs?
Do you move your computer around a lot?

Get a CRT/keep yours if you say yes to most of the following:
Do you play movies/games A LOT on your computer?
Are you willing to keep your big CRT if it means you have a more enjoyable gaming experience?
Is the heat output of your monitor not too bothersome?
Etc, etc..

Thats just my take on it.

I've been enjoying my LCD since I got it and would never go back CRT. The brightness took a while to get used to but now I go to work I think that our CRTs are way to dull. Only problem I have with my LCD is that text looks blurry when not in native resolutions but is not apparent when running games so it's not really much of an issue.

the problem is people compare their pos 4 year old crt to a new lcd that costs twice as much at the very least. crt's fade with age😛 its a poor comparison. people never seem to take the price difference into consideration, of course it looks better then your old pos if you pay 500-800-1000+ for an lcd😛

not to mention the space gained by a lcd is mostly pschological for most setups. space behind your monitor is less then useful😉

i have one of each, so i know😛

do all lcd's have option of running centered without stretching (i.e. with borders)?

would that have bad effect on lcd from uneven use?

Question 1) The option is available on some monitors via the front controls. ATI video cards have this as an option in the control panel software (works on any LCD). Not sure how nvidia or Matrox cards handle this option.

Question 2) Should have virtually no effect provided you run native resolution or full-screen stretch periodically. Contrary to popular belief, I've seen LCDs burn-in (more of a pixel-crystal-wont-untwist-all-the-way-back-to-black syndrome than a true burn in).

I have a hitachi cml174 with native resolution 1280X1024 and I run all my games at 1024x768 and they look fine. I think all this hype about native resolution is overrated.

What exactly is ghosting? I bought this future power 18.1 lcd way back when it first came out(paid about 900 for it:/). It worked great on all games like ravenshield etc, i was told the only thing ghosting is, is when you scroll through a window like a webpage in a webbrowser the text gets blurry until you stop scrolling? Mine certainly does that, when I scroll I cant read the text need to wait till it stops scrolling. But then again, I tried it on a crt and it's the same. So like...what exactly is the difference between a 16ms and say a 30+ ms (which i am sure mine is).

gaga, gnome

i can read stuff when im scrolling on my CRT...

A few things...

There's a similar thread here.

Glad so many of you are buying LCD's to help pay for the technology to bring bigger/faster/cheaper LCDs in the next year or two, when I'll be finally buying one. 🙂 For now, my desk is plenty strong enough to hold my CRT, and as for space, I probably wouldn't store anything behind my monitor anyway.

As someone said, if you play older games, many don't support 1280x1024.

Mugsy, thanks for the info (your link is inop though). I've asked about 19"+ LCD's w/ 16ms in a couple threads but got no reply.

Alot of you people think this, and are missing the point slightly.
The point is, to move the TFT to the back of the desk, allowing more room in front for you keyboard, mouse, other stuff, ect;

True, but I would think to do that, I'm gonna at least need a 20-21" then, especially at 1280x1024.

Another reason I'm waiting, as stated here, is that mfg's don't all rate their response time using the same method. So I'll wait until they become fast enough that this isn't really an issue.

Theres nout wrong with any 16ms TFT for gaming. At all. You`ll be waiting a long time for what you want, cos its already available !

Did you read the article I linked?

Also some people on here say their 16ms has ghosting. Nor as sharp as CRTs. Future LCD's should be. Technology advances quickly now. It shouldn't be long.

I dont need to read the article. I have a 16ms responce time TFT (Hitachi CML174SXW), becides ive seen it before.
I dont get any ghosting, or trails, or lag, or anything else. Perfect for games. And i play alot of different types of games.
