Any comment about the Apple 23" flat pannel? I am hoping the FAQ you are putting together has this info too. Please let me know. thanks. -kirk

You guys are killing me....I need to buy this flat screen and I don't have a clue what to do. Can you please, please help...thanks...Kirk

Mr. Kristopher...it has been almost a month since you mentioned you would post your doc. Please, please post something. I am now told there is a sale going on a CompUSA for a 17" flat screen for $299 that ends in a day or two. I don't know if it is worth it or not. I am also toying with the idea of getting two flat screens instead of one bigger one. Bottom line: I NEED HELP!!!!!

Please help all of us out and post anything...even if it a blank doc. That way you can say the electronic doggies ate it 😉

Very well done Mr. Kubicki. Very easy to understand, and yet covers almost every single aspect of lcds. I am really looking forward to part II.

Hi Kristopher,

I was happy to see a bunch of email saying there were changes. I never go a note in my email saying anything was posted so I never looked at the front page, just the last. Thanks so much for posting it.

One last question: can you post it as a document and not just pages that have to be turned?

It would be great to print it out to read the whole thing. Just a request.

Cheers for doing this.

You mean as a *.pdf file?
That`d be pretty easy to do, all you have to do is DL some software that makes a *.pdf printer. Open Document, print, select "PDF Printer", print document, and a *.pdf file appears on your desktop! Just like magic!.

You can get a version to print here. I had to "hack" things to get to that document in Mozilla, since the "Print this article" link doesn't work. FYI, take a normal URL (http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1855) and replace the "showdoc" with "printarticle" (like this: http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.html?i=1855) to pull up the version for printing. (that should work for any article) 🙂

Hello again Kristopher,

Can you do another "post" or "reply" to this thread so many of us can get alerted when you post the next part of your doc? I tried to look for the article you pointed me to manually and could not find it. Thanks for pointing me to the correct location, but if you hadn't do it, I would still be looking 🙂 I have this thread monitored so I get an email when a post comes in...I'm sure many of the readers do too.

I know you are going to be reviewing models (you mentioned you would get to the Apple display at some point) and we are all looking forward to that. If you can take somehow build a matrix that shows the three basic substrate manufactures and the models that use them by vendor (e.g., ViewSonic, Samsung, HP, etc.), I think that would go over big. These are the things we see in the stores. I know you can't do all of them, but maybe the top five or six brands.

I am still trying to understand how to determine if I need (or should) get an LCD for my gaming machine. I want a big screen (like a 21") and I have a great video card (GeForce4 4600Ti), but I am not sure when I will notice the ghosting you talk about. I know the big LCD screens do not have the fast refresh the 17" ones have. I'm just not sure when you notice the difference. I am a first person shooter gamer type person (been playing Tron 2.0 and it is awesome).

Can anyone else on this thread comment on performance from experience? Is it really bad? Will it ruin the games? If I spin my head in a game, will I see a trail all the way around? I just don't know how to test this. Maybe I'll just go to Fry's and buy a couple, test them, and report back. Of course, I'll have to return them. It seems kinda sleazy, but it's the only thing I can think of. I'll report back my findings. Maybe others listening on this thread can share their actual experiences and the kinds of games, resolutions, and feedback with us all. I'll try to do it next weekend (going to see Phantom tomorrow, so Sunday is out).

See ya online!

I've been using a PX191 for a week. My Windows 2000 thinks it's a Plug and Play Monitor. Is there a driver for it? I haven't been able to find one. TIA.

Hey ksv666,

Did you miss the front page 😉 http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1855

If you have any specific questions feel free to drop me a line.

Cheers,

Kristopher

If this is the FAQ in its present state, somebody please edit one of the early posts in this thread and insert the link. Preferably in the first post!!! AFAIK, the link is only found in one post in this long thread, the one I quote here. It took me a LONG TIME to find the link!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me like the easiest and most satisfactory way to read this article is to click the link "Print this Article" at the bottom of the page. You don't have to actually print it. Just read the "printable version." It's beautiful!

I know the answer to these, but I'm figuring some people will ask:

What is a TFT?
What is an Organic LED? (OLED)
What resolutions do PDA LCD's run at?
Does nonnative resolution look bad?

What is an Organic LED? (OLED)

Link.

Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology

An OLED is an electronic device made by placing a series of organic thin films between two conductors. When electrical current is applied, a bright light is emitted. This process is called electrophosphorescenc. A good picture of this phenomenum can be seen at Dupont Display's Web site (click on "How it Works", then "OLED"). Even with the layered system, these systems are very thin, usually less than 500 nm (0.5 thousandths of a millimeter).

When used to produce displays, OLED technology produces self-luminous displays that do not require backlighting. These properties result in thin, very compact displays. The displays also have a wide viewing angle, up to 160 degrees and require very little power, only 2-10 volts.

OLED displays have other advantages over LCDs as well:

Increased brightness
Faster response time for full motion video
Lighter weight
Greater durability
Broader operating temperature ranges
There are two types of OLED displays - passive and active.

Does nonnative resolution look bad?

My only experience is just what I tried this morning. I'd only run at native resolution on my PX191, which is 1280 x 1024, which was beautiful, even run through VGA. The other resolutions I tried were 1080 x 768 and 1152 x 864 and it looked terrible. Don't know if there's something that can be done to improve the image. This is running at 75 Hz.

Try running in centered mode,my Samsung 191t allows me to run most res at full screen or centred mode ,you do lose part of the screen size in centred mode but the image looks awesome.
