LCD decision

I would highly recommend this SDM-HS94P if you have the money, the superb image, 12ms response time and super bright display can't be missed 🙂

I have the Dell 2005FPW and love it. But if you can't afford that, wait for a good deal on the Dell 1901FP as I heard it's a pretty decent gaming screen.

Egads no... the Dell 1901FP has a 25ms response time... NOT for gamers! That is a BUSINESS monitor... the only games you play on a Dell 1901FP is solitare (even then, it may ghost).

If you want proof of that, my Air Force job has me planted in front of a Dell 1901FP all day long. It's a nice monitor, but I wouldn't do any serious gaming on it!

I think I can beat it, seeing 19in on newegg for that much, or maybe a little more. I'd rather get the 19in ones, as this is what I'm used to.

If you're picky, do not get an LCD. You won't be impressed with the black reproduction or the dead pixels/backlight leakage.

Hold out with your CRT for a bit longer and wait for new technology.

I have a BenQ FP937S 12ms, 500:1 contrast ratio, 19" LCD. It's alright but the LCD technology as a whole doesn't impress me. It's a good price for a 19" LCD, and if you get no dead pixels you'll be happy with it.

At this time, you will not find a 19 inch 8 ms 8 bit panel.

So what about the Viewsonic?s VP912B , is it a 8bit or 6bit panel? the gamepc review really doesnt say. Does anyone have the L90D+? If so, id like to hear more opinions on it.

I want an LCD for 2 reasons;

A. DVI

The SCEPTRE X9g looks very nice from the specs; 12ms, 8bit, dvi, svideo, and speakers. One thing I dont like is the 1 year warranty. Most companies will give you 3 years. I am also not sure about their dead pixel policy. here it says

LCD exclusion: Sceptre does not warrant burned pixels on any and or all LCD displays.

If they are refering to deal pixels that's an extremely poor policy. If you got one with no dead pixels what-so-ever though it could be a great deal.
I have not seen this monitor in person either. It's always best to actually see what your getting. Even ask an employee at a local shop if you can play a game on it.

I have seen the new sony 19" xbrite's and they look *very* nice. But it also will cost you big time. BTW anyone know who makes these displays for sony?

My monitor is dying a slow death so I am also looking at LCD's. From what I have gathered though, going from a crt to a lcd there are certain things that you will notice right away no matter how good the screen is. Colors will not be as accurate and vivid, your max resolution will be MUCH smaller, and I think most are stuck at a 75hz refresh rate. (Im running at 100hz atm)

WEll let me chime in by saying that I have not yet noticed a loss of picture quality in my 6bit panel (SDM-HS94p) the colors are quite good and unless you are doing some photo editing chances are you wont notice them either, due to some really good dithering. I loaded up photoshop CS and I dont notice a difference in color purity (although the black is a bit off due to the backlight) between that and my samsung 900NF. The purists will want you to believe that you will live in agony if you get a 6bit panel, but it all depends on your eyes, not the rantings of other people.

Go to a store and look at the Sony SDM-HS94P or the Viewsonic VP912B and see for yourself if you have a big problem with the the "dithering" i never noticed it untill i looked at the picture on anandtech, and its not like Anand went and pulled something you might see every day, it was specifically constructed to show the flaw, and is not typically what you will see in every picture or game as I can attest to.

Actually it's the VP171B-2 that is the 8ms panel, the regular VP171B is 16ms.

I am an avid gamer and just spent my first evening with a VP912B LCD, having switched from a 19" CRT.

I can say this... there's good and bad mixed in there.

In native resolutions, you will be pleased. I prefer gaming in native on the Viewsonic VP912B LCD over my old Samsung 955DF CRT.

However... as a gamer, you'll probably also use the LCD in non-native resolutions... if you do, you will see a noticeable drop in image quality... playable yes; as sharp as a CRT? No.

There's give and take here. Some things I like better, some things I miss. I am convinced at this moment in time, there is no "perfect solution" for a gamer in LCDs. Either stick with your CRT, or realize there will be positives and negatives at going with an LCD.

As for streaking/ghosting... with the 12ms VP912B, I can assure you I have noticed NO GHOSTING at all.

I really love Doom3 and Painkiller on my new LCD... however some of my older games don't look quite as nice if I have to play them in non-native resolution. It's all give and take.

The vp912b appears to be an 8 bit panel but there is a good deal of conflicting information.
Note that the vp912b supports 16.7 million colors according to the Viewsonic website (pdf product comparison). Typically, 6 bit panels claim 16.2 million colors. Of course, if anyone has any proof that this is incorrect I would be glad to hear it.

I got a Samsung 910T for my bro-in-law from newegg and it had no dead pixels... it was worth the savings.

I am looking at the Hyundai L90D+ from chiefvalue.com for $365.... sweet deal

Man, I must be blind. I have a 21" CRT as my main monitor and a 15" Sony LCD (25ms response) as my second, when I go to lan parties the 12lbs Sonys wins over the 75lbs Nokia 21" so that is what I use. I have NEVER seen ghosting on it, never and that is with playing UT2K4, Half Life 2, Doom 3, and CS: Source. Granted, most of the time I gave on my CRT and at LANs I usually only play UT2K4, but I have looked specifically for ghosting and never noticed it.

I have, however, noticed a difference between DVI and Analog. I specifically looked for a LCD with DVI (I paid $350 for this 15" a year and a half ago) and I ran tests with my 8500, 9600 pro, and my current 6800GT and can notice IQ differences between analog and dvi inputs.

Now, getting to the topic at hand... Has anyone here actually used that Hyundi panel? I would love to replace this lumbering 21" crt and am looking at the Dell 2005FPW, 2001FP, or any decent 19" I can find. That looks like it might be alot of performance for not so much price. In fact, at that price I might be tempted to buy two of them...
