LCD decision

Ok, I need to ditch my CRT and get an LCD. My requirements are as follows;

1. I'm on a 19in CRT right now. I like this size. So 18-19in would be nice.

2. Must be DVI AND come with DVI cable. My friend just got a viewsonic vx910, didn't come with the cable. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

3. On the cheap!

This is not a purchase today, so current offers need not apply, just looking really for a brand that is affordable and quality. Browsing newegg right now.

I got a BenQ FP931 which is around $350, 19inches, 16ms. and It works well with HL2, and other games. My only gripe is that I wish it was a little bit brighter. But at that price point with DVI, I can't really complain too much. Overall it is a great monitor for me.

But what's the response time on that monitor?? Doesn't look like it would do to well with games if it is 20ms+

Skiing if you want a good fast 19" you ar egoing to have to pay for it, there is no avioding that.. I paid $599 (AR) for my Sony 19" and it did come with a DVI cable DVI port 12ms panel, 3yr warrantee, and not a single defect. If you insist on goig cheap i would follow a previous posters advice and get the BenQ

That Hyundia has a 8ms response time. Only downside is the limited viewing angles.

Sony does not make TFT screens; their monitors use screens made by other companies. The trick when buying a LCD monitor is finding one with a fast screen, not buying a brand name. that Hyundia shown uses the same TFT as the fast Samsung monitors.

Keep in mind that the 8ms Hyundai is a 6 Bit panel.

I just received my Samsung 193P, which is great. I am very happy with it. (20ms) yes, it ghosts somewhat, but not near enough to bother me.

There was a thread about this a few days ago. A member sent an e-mail to Hyndai and it was confirmed 8ms(Rising and falling) and 6-bit.

Also, how do people know the few companies that make TFT panels? Is it common, or public, knowledge? And how would one discover which panel a LCD distributor uses?

What monitors has what panel? Now that is a good question!!!

i have a 17in sony with a 20ms response time and i can only notice the ghosting when i really try, otherwise its completely unnoticable.

also whats so great about a dvi input?

Analog

VC [digital]-><conversion> [Analog Signal ->LCD Monitor <conversion> [digital signal and picture]

Digital

VC [digital]-> [digital signal untouched] -> LCD monitor [digital picture shown]


also DVI has a higher bandwidth, or so ive heard, for me its a cleaner signal and usually a must on 19" or higher LCDs

so does it matter that i have a VGA input instead of a DVI, do i lose a lot of picture quality, becuase from what i have seen from my and others monitors, this is pretty crystal clear

Well, it matters for someone like me. My video card doesn't have vga output.

Well if it's 8ms response, and it has DVI inputs, and it's that cheap, the Hyundai is a steal... of course, I've read multiple reviews that state it is a 25ms LCD, so the monitor really has me confused!

I just said forget-it and bought a Viewsonic VP912B. Oh well.

L90D+ = 8 ms

6bit color panel = yucky colors
8bit color panel = decent

People complain about LCD lack of colors. 6bit panels are giving LCDs bad reputation. So many people are now caught up in response time as that's all they hear. But I think whether it's 6 or 8bit panel is just as important. Definitely something to consider.

edit: oops. Didn't see gamer. Well, response time > colors for gamers so unless you can find 19" LCD with fast response time and 8bit panel, you're pretty limited to 6bit 8ms panels.
