LCD computer monitor - widescreen or no?

Actually, that's unfortunately not the case. The widescreen monitors are also quite ahead in terms of tech. Well if you were going to get the NEC, yes, but the VX2025WM is also a very good value screen (~$300) for which there is no 16x12 equivalent. If you want 4:3 I wouldn't consider anything less than the ViewSonic VP2030b or LG L2000C.

the widescreen is killer for text editors if you rotate it. 1080x1650 = seeing a whole lot on the screen at once. i use it for drafting all the time.
