LCD broken, only 3 weeks, doh! >.<

Hi,

Could someone please identify the problem here?

I bought an Acer 19 inch LCD from staples 3 weeks ago. I was one of the lucky ones and got one of the 8ms panels with DVI for 180!! Wohoo!!

Well, woohoo no more. Last night a 2 inch wide opaque blue stripe appeared about a quarter of the way in from the left. When I turn the monitor off, it becomes a really bright thin line in the same spot. Is the monitor busted or is it someting else?

Does this happen at a refresh of 60 Hz and 75 Hz?

Hmm, how do I check the refresh rate? Sorry, I'm not the most technical person.

In Windows XP, right click on the Desktop, select Properties. Go to the Settings tab and click the Advanced button. Go the Monitor tab. The refresh rate will be listed in the middle of that page. After you set it to either 60 Hz or 75 Hz you can make sure that it got set correctly by going into your monitor's on screen display (OSD), which you can access by pressing the menu buttons. There should be an info page in that setup that lists what refresh rate the monitor is receiving.

There is only one option there, 60 hertz.

Do you have the exact model of your monitor? I can check if it supports 75 Hz then we can try adding 75 Hz to that list.

sounds like something i accidentally did to my monitor

with the samsung magic tune program i accidentally pressed the wrong VGA type... something like SXVGA ? i dont know pressed wrong one, screen goes wacko and would turn really bright and just stay that way.. couldnt undo it until i went to safe mode and deleted that program

BTW, I havent dowloaded any new programs. I was just on the internet when this happened.

Well, unfortunately, I can't even find the vertical sync of that monitor or the even any of the Acer monitors (it's almost always listed). If it just happened all of a sudden then I'd wager that the monitor is defective. It could be the video card. Does that monitor also have a VGA connection you can try? Right now are you using DVI?

Well I just called up staples. They said they would let me exchange it. I'd still prefer this to be fixed but if theres no hope, theres no hope

Given that there is no hope, could you please take a peak at the staples site for me and identify like the top 3 19 inch + monitors there for under 400. I use my pc for games, mostly ffxi but I'll throw a FPS in once in a while as well.

Just let them exchange it. Something similar happened to me with my first LCD, a 19" Acer AL1912b. Brand new, it had about a 3" wide column of stuck pixels. Got it exchanged for another one (both were brand new in box) and the replacement has bee perfect for years now. Indeed I'm using this monitor as I type this message. Not a single dead/stuck pixel.
