lblue screen of death, and how not to overreact

this is my story of how i spent 500$ to correct a 40$ issue.

my configuration was

ecs pt35 a mobo
intel core2duo 6750
ati radeon 4850
2 gb ddr2 ram


step 1)

after a new install of Windows 7 i started running into the blue screen error. my first thoughts was to reinstall windows. went back to a clean install of XP


step 2) new XP installed, blue screen again. checked systems temp. cpu running at 90c under load. heatsink had come off of mobo. whoops. replaced heatsink


step 3) blue screen again. now im assuming i've fried the cpu. i order 1 gigabyte mobo, amd pheonom 2 x4 955, and 4 gigs of ddr3 ram. fresh install of windows 7. .....

blue screen again!!!!


step) 4. at this point im thinking the only things left to replace are the video card and hard drive. replace HD and video card.......


BLUE SCREEN!!!!!

at this point im not sure what to do. i put all my other components in another case and they are running fine. i finally realize the problem. i take out my 35$ 6yr old wireless card and it boots flawlessly.





so before you solve your problems with buying new equipment, replace the cheapest piece first.

Interesting. It wasn't a Linksys WRT54G was it? I had issues after installing W7 as well - not blue screens, but hard freezing. I found that it was a driver issue, and would most likely never be fixed.

yes it was. wouldnt boot with xp or windows 7

so before you solve your problems with buying new equipment, replace the cheapest piece first.

Wise words... I would think this is a given fact.

He said his wireless card was fubar... A wrt54g is a router isn't it? Why would you need a driver for a router? I've never installed a router driver.

Nah, Linksys has routers and wireless cards by the same name. Dumb, I know. Ridiculous how long it took me to figure out the problem.

You sure about that for the wireless card? I've never seen a Linksys Wireless card with WRT54G on it.
