Layoffs AGAIN. What is happening in your company?

We had yet another round of layoffs at the company I work. I lost my secretary and one employee 🙁

This is the 3rd layoff since October and the rumor is another is coming in July. Seems like every quarter we are having one.

Is this what you guys are seeing where you work?

Interestingly, the company where I work has been hiring throughout the recession. In fact, I got my job here in November when I couldn't get a nibble from any other company.

My guess for the reason for that is the project cycles here are always long-term (9+ months on average), so we're still doing work that our clients contracted us to do 1-2 years ago. In other words, there's a lag. I imagine that a few months from now, we'll be running out of work, and we might have to cut down then.

Well, being that we're a bunch of federal workers (CDC), no one is getting laid off, but we take the hit in terms of funding for other stuff. Need new lab equipment? Forget it. Need a part-time lab assistant? Forget it. Need to upgrade the infrastructure of our ancient buildings to avoid power outages during future anthrax crises? Forget it.

I had to take a 5% paycut recently, across the board. So far (knocking on wood) no one in my department has been let go. Other departments have been knocked around though

the whole of the our Spanish office was layed at the end of January and all there work got dumped on us, it p!ssed me off right off as it seemed most of it landed on me

Thats what I'm seeing now. I have work and no one free to do it.

My company is pretty much recession proof (national ISP....people will let thier kids go hungry before dropping their Internet connection). The problem is all these accountant weasels artificially inflating the books to drive up stock prices. Enron did it and got caught, but almost every company does it. NVidia did it to drive 3DFX out of business a couple of years back, and now they're paying for it too. This will pass and hopefully everything will be back on track by the end of the year.

Our company went from 1200 to 750 employees in the past 3 years.

I started here in 96 and I am lucky I still have a job.

Luckily, my job duties were "created" while working here so noone else can easily do my job at this point. 🙂

My company had three rounds of layoffs in about 8 months. I quit and started my own business. Going pretty well through the first week. Meet up with friends this weekend to shoot some pool, they say meeting with VP means another *large* layoff coming. Looks like I got out just in time 😀

Hehe...this made me think that even if I weren't a fed I'd still have good job security. Reason being, I do research on bacterial STD's.....people are gonna be knocking boots and spreading bugs regardless of the state of the economy.😉

I wonder if EDS is doing another round of layoffs... I was let go in January. Luckily, the local Gamestop DFW locations are hiring 😉

We haven't had layoffs since a couple months ago, but they're definitely taking advantage of the economic situation & sh!tty job market by forcing more & more unpleasant policies/requirements on the techs. They know people need their jobs, so they can get away with it.

I hope it turns around & bites them in the ass when the economy improves, I know I won't be working at this God-forsaken hell hole of a company any longer than necessary.

Levi Straus is laying off nearly 4000 employees in San Francisco and this layoff will effect many other small contractors and suppliers and service workers. And this is on top of all the .com failures. And what's going to happen to the Compac employees if/when HP merges or aquires them?? Have we hit bottom yet? Will it all bounce back??

<< We've been lucky the last while but I've personally been laid off so I know how "fun" it is. >>

Whats worse is when you have to tell someone.

What they do with us is have us managers lay off people in different groups so there is not emotional attachment

(yeah right) 🙁

My company has never had a layoff (in 70 years), so that's some nice security. Compound that with the notice I just got that we'll be recieving our 2nd bonuses this year and I'm even less worried.

my company doesn't call it a lay off
i forget the exact term,
but basically, the idea is, when john doe needs to be layed off...
the company tells john, that his position is changing its job description,
and that he no longer qualifies, and that the company has no interest in training him to fit that qualification.

the company has yet to lay off people once in its history.
buncha bs if you ask me.

There have been some layoffs at my work, some of the software developers were let go, some artists and modelers were too. Entertainment industry got rocked by sept 11 after the near strike last July, no one really started production on any movies between sept and january. There's a bunch of stuff starting now and since the beginning of the year, but we don't start work on a movie till 6-9 months after production starts. Support staff doesn't get paid as much as some animators and artists, so my job is ok for now, but if we don't get any of these upcoming contracts, then it could be really rough times.

hadn't heard this. have more info?

Its really slow here... but next week its gonna be a hell hole!!! thats what i heard from my monday meeting. Hopefully, I won't get layoff 🙁 else I'll have to work at one of those In and Out burgers joints.

I was sent packing along with most of Delta Air Lines' co-ops last September. They are still in a hiring-freeze.

*GTa <-- Probably the first and last co-op Delta e-Business will ever have!
