Laying new carpet in car?

Figured this might be a cheap way to get my car looking decent on the inside. Right now there is some crappy stained blue carpet, so I thought I might throw some nice white/tan carpet in it.

I usually take care of the inside of my car but the previous owner did not. Therefore there are some stains as well as small rips.


+Do I just need to go to a carpet store and buy a roll of carpet and cut to fit or is there more to it?

+Also, how is the carpet put down, Glue or nails?

+Then, if anyone would guess, how long would a project like this take?

+What thickness of carpet should I look for? I want something comfortable but not too thick. Do I lay down a cushion layer as if doing a bedroom?

Auto carpet is molded to fit the floor pan, so your best bet might be searching out someone who sells molded replacement carpet for your car, like (believe it or not) JC Whitney or Year One.

Normal vehicle carpeting for modern cars is typically molded to the shape of the floor pan. It's not just a roll of fabric.

these questions make me wonder.

as stated, automotive carpet has to come from the manufacturer or a supplier of aftermarket products (if it's an old car, these would be repop items from year one and the like). it's made for the car. on older cars, it's probably one or two sections with a seperate sheet of insulation underneath. on modern cars, multiple materials are typically combined into one single piece, and the carpet is usually installed in three sections (driver, passenger, and rear).

Ok, I did not know they were that inexpensive for a precut carpet for my car. I guess that pretty much sums up what I will be getting.

Before you go through the trouble of replacing the carpet I would rent a carpet cleaner with an upholstery attachment and give your carpet a really deep cleaning. It might give you better results than you would think. Rips you might be able to repair with some work, take a few pics and somebody here may have an idea.

If not, just go to Home Depot and order some of the shag carpeting. Should make your car awesome. In fact while you're at it, why not put down tile or hardwood flooring, maybe some crown molding, too, and a granite dash.

Nobody re-carpets their car.

Seriously though, nicer floor mats may take the edge off the nastiness. If you want to replace all of the carpet, it is possible but you'll need to get molded carpet that fits your car. You might find some nicer carpet in a junkyard, although not likely.

I've bought new carpet several times for various cars. Most cars you can find carpet for around $100, factory molded. Install is typically painless.

Honestly if you love your car and plan on keeping it for a while I think a $100 - $150 is worth it. Just depends what your priorities are and if you can afford it.

To change the carpet you will need to:

Remove the seats.
Remove the center floor console (if it has one)
Remove the kick panels.
Remove the door sill cover plates.

After that just check the condition of the mat
and also clean up the metal floor. Lay in new
mat and carpet, trim as needed and put all
the other items back in.
