I would've loved to pull this one a few months ago...

I live in KY, and go to school @ the University of Louisville. I was in town, on a 55 section of I-65. Doing 65 to pass some guy, when someone starts tailgating me...so I speed up a little, and end up alongside a train of cars...guy's still tailgating me @ 70, 75, 80...I'm just trying to put some room in between us, finally I pass the group of cars, and get over to let this crazy speed demon through.

And watch as the cop who'd been doing this flys by me.

Intentionally slamming on your brakes like that is a criminal act and will land you in jail for many years. There's a case where a woman was killed in such an instance, and the girl that braked is now doing life.

I don't believe you. Show me the link please to that case.

Lol. I saw it on dateline about two years back, it's out there. I'm not doing the legwork for you, if you want to find it I'm sure you can.

Confirmed. Although I believe it was an insurance scam... some gang of people that were driving around. It worked like this:

You= innocent person driving too close to car in front of you in a car that is likely insured.

Car in front of you happens to part of scammers.

3rd car (also scammer) drives in front of the car you are behind and slams on brakes. Car in front of you
also slams on brakes. You = unaware this was a possibility are following too close and rear-end them.

First car wasn't hit (they just drive off). Car 2 (the one you hit) knew it was about to happen and probably didn't hit the first car. Well, after you hit them, they all have neck injuries and require lots of expensive health care.

Normally they collected big $$$ and had no problems... until they got greedy and did it one too many times. That time the person that they slammed the brakes on ended up getting killed. (I think she swerved or something, car flipped, etc).

That is basically how I remembered the story. I'm too lazy to look it up too, but, I'm sure you can find that somewhere. It was a dateline or some other evening news show that I saw that on.

MORAL of the story: Don't tailgate.
MORAL 2: If you deliberately cause an accident, you can (and should) get in trouble, even if someone is tailgating you. That said, it's hard (but not impossible) to disprove that you thought you saw a bird jump out in front of you or a dog etc.

Morality of the story is get a better car that has abs breaks etc and also make sure the car is strong enough that you will not die if it flipped or hit the car in front of you at 70+. Bmw would be a good choice

That's not right. You should use the 2-second rule as your minimum if you want to argue anything with the police/judge. The car length won't do it.

I know for a fact you're supposed to leave room but I don't know how its measured. I remember my teacher saying something about car lengths...

So I was driving home today on the Parkway at a fast pace. The speed limit in 65 in NJ and I was traveling at 74 mph. Suddenly I had this a$$hole lady come down on me tailgating me to no end. She must have been doing at least 90 mph. I was so mad that I was actually thinking about jamming the car brakes so she would slam into the back end of my car.

So if this were to happen and I sued her for back and wrist injuries, would I stand a chance of winning a settlement in court. She was the one that slammed into me and usually the last car that causes the accident is at fault. Am I right about that? And.. if the judge would ask me why I slammed my brakes, I could tell him/her that a rabbit stepped in front of my car and I didn't want to hit it. I'm a animal lover and I was trying to avoid running it over. Oh.. and I couldn't swerve to the right because I had a car next to me. So the only option was to quickly hit the brakes and because this lady was tailgating me she was the one that caused the accident.

How would that go in court? :D

Forget what everyone's telling you. If you're willing to risk your life or her life, you'd win in court easy. She's in clear violation of the traffic laws. Tailgating is a crime. Ask any officer and they'll tell you the regulation number. If someone rear ends you at anytime, they'll get a ticket for violation of XXXX where XXXX is the code number your state uses for no tailgating.

Not if it can be provent that sole purpose of him breaking was to cause an accident and collect insurance payment from the insurance company.
