They really are very simple machines, and it sounds like you did an excellent job of troubleshooting etc.

It really is very strange to have problems after only a year.

You do not have a float carburetor, much like I suspected. Wish I could've been around to help you more. I'm going to be rebuilding my lawnmower sometime soon. I picked this 4.5HP shortblock up on eBay for 50$. It will replace the old, squeeky, worn out, will-barely-start-without-starting-fluid 3.5HP Briggs currently on the mower.

Also got this new carburetor for ~20. 😀

I plan on taking lots of pics and making a thread. 😀
