Mulch is better if you only take off a small amount each time.
Long clippings will hurt vs help the lawn.

My riding mower is set up for bagging right now. I tend to be lazy about mowing it though so probably for the better. Time wise it takes maybe 5 minutes longer but i dont have ot bag it either. Just toss it in my yard waste pile.

Thought of going mulch but just doesnt seem to be worth it. I tend to wait till the grass is longer and then mow it rather than mowing more and keeping it at desired height.

I have a really old Toro mower that can either side discharge or bag, but the bag is annoying even for my tiny little plot. I just let it discharge and lay there really. OK, it is "bad" for the grass to do that when it gets longer, but my "yard" is only 50% grass and the rest all kinds of other weeds and stuff, so it isn't like I have a lawn I really care about anyway. I rent the place, it was this way when I got here, and the landlord doesn't care, so I'm not spending gobs of time and money trying to make a neat yard out of this place :p

Very often I just mulch the front yard, it doesn't grow very much, but I bag the back yard.

Best thing is to mulch it BUT you have to do it every 3-4 days (twice a week).

I have never brought myself to do that yet....but I need to. (been mostly bagging)

Mine just shoots grass out the side. Maybe that's not optimal, but I don't care. I just leave the clippings sitting on the grass. Maybe it'll block out the sun and kill it. One can hope.

I bag one side and mulch the other. Yard is too big to bag it all and have it taken away from the curb, so i go every other mow. Need to get a compost bin and be done with it. I used to dump it behind the shed but we moved so that isnt an option anymore.

Mulching option takes shorter amount of time plus I dont have clippings to dispose of.

We recently had to bag our clippings since the lawn needs to be dethatched. Lots of brown dead grass is building up in some places that is choking the good grass underneath. Since it needs to be removed, it makes sense at this point to bag the clippings.

It depends how long the grass is when I get around to mowing it.
Grass is long - bag
Grass is short - mulch

Mainly because if it's too long it looks like crap after the clippings get bunched up and eventually turn yellow.

Anybody here live in a desert area? I always bag my grass and never mulch. Not sure if mulching will work. I have 1/4 of an acre and get flood irrigation every 2 weeks.

Always bag the clippings and use a good organic fertilizer. 1528 Slow release is great.. for the midwest anyway.

Mostly bagging for me. I tried the mulching but it doesn't get spread as much as the lawn likes and I have brown spots where it got no sun. The blades were prob too long so I might try mulching again later when the weather cools down.

I'd like to mulch since my lawn needs the organic matter. But I have too much need for the clippings in the garden.

I put down cardboard boxes (flattened) and pile on 2 inches of grass clippings. Perfect weed stop with almost no effort and no chemicals. But my garden is so big that it takes most of the summer to complete that task. Then next spring I need to restart to fill in the decomposed areas.

I just never get enough grass to complete the garden before the fall sets in.

I like that idea. There's couple places I could use the grass clippings to suffocate the weeds and grass around my garden. My compost tumbler is already full of grass.

if you mow it often enough there is no need to bag it AT ALL... it is better for the grass if you don't.

on the other hand if the grass is long when you mow it (more than 1/2"-3/4") then you do your grass harm by not bagging it.

first few mows i bag up and burn.

after that i mow so often that i don't need a mulch kit or bagger

I never bag. I do fertilize, lawn looks fine. My dad used to always bag, it was a huge pain in the ass. i don't bother and I win every time. It seems a huge extra hassle.
