^ I've read everywhere that keeping your grass tall shades out weeds. Yet all landscapers do grass really short. I guess the difference is their herbicides are effective. My neighbors don't have the weeds I do either. I think it's just really bad soil which I've been meaning to test. We took out a tree with extensive roots before we put the sod in and only that side is really bad.

Yep 3-4" is best to keep the weeds out. A lot of people like really short grass though because it can look good but it usually suffers because of it.

And yeah neighbors suck.. I remember taking care of a few lawns that had nothing but yards full of hundreds of dandelions on every side of the back yard.. I managed to keep it weed free though. Blanket sprayed the heck out of it every application and made sure I drifted it into the neighbors lawns.

Bit OT, but what can I do about brown spots from dog piss? I've got a few spots in the BY I'd like to get green again.

Only thing you can really do is watch where your dog pee's and then dump water on the area after every time. Also make sure your dog drinks lots of water and try and find low nitrogen dog food if possible.

^ my neighbor's dog craps on my lawn once in a while. Last year during the summer it got really brown in the same general area - just one large circle really - and I thought it was summer patch or whatever fungus. Could it have been the effects of dog piss over time? Do they look similar?

Yep most likely from the dog piss
