My wife and I debated the "true" outcome also. My thought process was that there is no way on the planet that someone would be that meticulous and not have a hiding place or alternate escape route planned. Her take was that he did go into the water and commit suicide because he was all about control and he was then able to control how his life ended.
Now that I think about it, her side really doesn't do it for me because he could have just blown himself up in the building and accomplished the same thing. Based on the fact that he was already able to commit murder, there really wasn't anything that should have stopped him in that case either.
