Jerry Orbach, star of the US TV series Law & Order, shown on Five in Britain, has died of prostate cancer aged 69.

He died in New York after several weeks of treatment, said his publicist, Audrey Davis.

When his illness was diagnosed, he had begun production of a spin-off series ? Law & Order: Trial By Jury ? after 12 seasons playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in the original series.

On Broadway, the Bronx-born Orbach starred in hit musicals including Chicago and 42nd Street.

Among his film appearances were roles in Dirty Dancing, Prince of the City and Crimes and Misdemeanours.

I was always a big fan of his work, and not just on Law and Order.

What many of his current fans don't realize is that he was the biggest actor on Broadway for 15 years, and THAT'S his true claim to fame and true passion, not L&O.

He was the original Julian Marsh in 42nd Street and the original Billy Flynn in Chicago. The lead male in two of the biggest shows of the 1960s and 1970s, which had successful second runs in the 90s and are still popular both on and off Broadway today. He also got a Tony for playing Sky Masterson in the Guys and Dolls revival and was in Carnival and Carousel to name a few.

From his earlier days...

I'm old enough to know he had a long, accomplished career on Broadway, and I loved the Lenny Briscoe character on Law & Order. One of my favorites of his famous wisecracks:

Briscoe and Green are grilling the suspect and boxing him into a corner. As the scene draws to a close, they finally ask him the killer question, and the suspect says, "I don't know."

Briscoe just says "Third base." < cut to black >

I was watching with a friend, and we both just cracked up at the throw away reference to the old Abbot & Costello "Who's On First?" routine. We figured some screenwriter and most of the cast and crew were chuckling for days about a quick line that probably went over the heads of a large part of the audience.

RIP. :wine: 😎

We watched some Law and Order reruns on TNT last night. They flashed some nice photos of him from time to time, along with the message that he will be missed. I have seen a few short clips of him on broadway in recent years. I wish I had seem a complete show, though.
